Wisconsin Geography- Much of the state consists of gently rolling plains, but northern Wisconsin is heavily forested. Limestone and sandstone bluffs overlook the Mississippi River on the state's western edge. The state's distinctive geology is due in large part to great ancient glaciers. Those huge waves of ice carved and molded the land and left nearly 15,000 inland lakes behind. Lake Michigan forms the state's eastern boundary and Lake Superior part of its northern border. Devils in Wisconsin
Wisconsin geography knows many devils. Devils Lake. Devils Monument. Devils Head Ski Resort. Devils Washbowl. Why so many devils? The origination of many of the Devils across Wisconsin probably has more to do with racial hatred than anything else. Early white settlers were mostly Christian and viewed Native Americans with their different spiritual practices as heathens (at best) or savages and devil-worshipers (most likely). It's a long-standing tradition across time to demonize your foes prior to taking everything they have – including their lives – to assuage any possible feelings of guilt. The Native American spiritual tradition was odd – frightening – to these white settlers. Christianity was, and is, for the most part fairly simplistic in its depiction of the spirit world; it's a battle of good and evil, between God and the Devil. Native Americans saw spirits in many shapes and forms and though there was sometimes a Supreme Being, goodness or badness or tricks flowed from a variety of sources. In the simplistic Either/Or view of the early settlers, this mind-set of multiple spiritual sources was tantamount to practicing deviltry, and so settlers tended to put a malevolent spin on the landscape when interpreting native names for the surrounding landscape. For example, Devil's Lake in Sauk County is the white settlers' interpretation of the Ho-Chunk name

    Increase Lapham
from Wisconsin Authors and Their Works 1918
    by Charles Rounds
Increase Lapham, one of America's best known naturalists and engineers, was born in Palmyra, New York, in 1811, and died in Milwaukee in 1875. He was assistant surveyor of the Erie canal and was on the engineering force that constructed the Welland and Miami canals. He came to Milwaukee in 1836. From 1873 to 1875 he was chief geologist for the state of Wisconsin. His contributions to the scientific knowledge of the geology, topography, and botany of his adopted state are second to none. Probably few of our citizens realize how many results of his labors are to be found in the Milwaukee public library, and the State Historical Library, in the form of maps, statistics, and tabulations of various sorts. Among his most important works are "A Geographical and Topographical Description of Wisconsin," 1844; "Antiquities of Wisconsin," "Geological Map of Wisconsin," 1855. The selection here given shows his careful, scholarly habits of thought; his painstaking sense of accuracy, even down to the minutest detail; and at the same time his enlivening and human imagination. Increase Lapham should be held in the memory of Wisconsin people as one of the choicest and most useful spirits who have been nurtured by or have ministered to her life and institutions.

    Japanese Internment Camps
During the 1880s, Asian immigrants, mostly Chinese, were imported to the United States. By 1908, 135,000 Japanese had arrived. With the Oriental Exclusion Proclamation (1907) the U.S. government limited Japanese immigration. By 1924 further immigration was banned and those who had entered the country earlier were barred from becoming U.S. citizens. This ban was not lifted by Congress until 1952! On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 that authorized US government to forcibly roundup 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry into 10 internment camps At this time, the Canadian government interned 26,000 Japanese Canadians.
