Advocacy is a type of problem solving designed to protect personal rights and to ensure a dignified existence. There are many types of advocacy: for example, systems advocacy is useful for changing "the system" and used to promote causes. Legal advocacy is what lawyers are paid to do and legislative advocacy is designed to change laws. Individual advocacy involves advocating for another. Self-advocacy involves advocating for oneself.

  • Enhance parent-child interaction and parenting skills
  • Empower parents as primary educators of their children
Read on to find out about specific Family Visiting programs in your community. Building Families-Eau Claire
Building Families is a voluntary home visiting service for first time parents. The program offers parent education activities and support to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect to those individuals who are identified at risk of abusing their children. Services begin upon discharge from the hospital with systematic screening, completed by local public health departments, of all new parents to identify those in most need of in-home support and education. The overall approach of Building Families is to offer all new parents supportive services, whether it is only one or two home visits, or more visits for at-risk families. All new parents are screened upon discharge from the hospital to identify those in most need of in-home support and education. Families receive weekly home visits from trained home visitors, tapering off to quarterly visits as the family's needs decrease.

"Earth Day Every Day" proclaims the official sign for Merrill Middle School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, just south of my town, Appleton. That's me behind the sign, feeling rather uninspired by the school's apparent emphasis on environmental activism instead of academics. Imagine what our kids could do and learn if every day was math day, history day, science day, and reading and writing day? It almost staggers the imagination, but maybe they would graduate with actual competence in math, history, science, and English.
Introduction
In many elementary and secondary schools, education seems more focused on fostering attitudes ("affective education") than on teaching. Self-esteem is sometimes treated as the ultimate goal, while many parents are clamoring for a return to academics. With 4 children attending public schools, I want real education to occur. Sadly, many schools focus on popular "reforms" and new programs that detract from academics. Goals 2000, workforce education

Education Issues Series
Special Education Inclusion Educators' Bulletin Board Classroom resources IDEAS Resource pages on educational issues ... ONLINE SERVICES This article was updated November 5, 2001 Inclusion remains a controversial concept in education because it relates to educational and social values, as well as to our sense of individual worth. Any discussion about inclusion should address several important questions:
  • Do we value all children equally? Is anyone more or less valuable? What do we mean by "inclusion?" Are there some children for whom "inclusion" is inappropriate?
There are advocates on both sides of the issue. James Kauffman of the University of Virginia views inclusion as a policy driven by an unrealistic expectation that money will be saved. Furthermore, he argues that trying to force all students into the inclusion mold is just as coercive and discriminatory as trying to force all students into the mold of a special education class or residential institution. At the other end of the spectrum are those who believe that all students belong in the regular education classroom, and that "good" teachers are those who can meet the needs of all the students, regardless of what those needs may be.

48 schools receive $50,000 Title I school improvement grants
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster recently announced that 48 schools will share $2.4 million in grants to help them meet their goals for improving student achievement. Fourteen of the grants are going to new schools in the Menominee Indian and Milwaukee Public school districts, and 34 are continuing grants. “These schools face some of the greatest socioeconomic and student achievement challenges in the state,” Burmaster noted. “Additional funding through these grants will help these schools pursue a number of activities to boost student learning. They may use the funds to increase student tutoring services, expand summer school programming, provide professional staff development, or purchase supplemental instructional materials. The goal is to lift achievement for all students and close the gap between students of color, economically disadvantaged students, and their peers.” Funding for the grants is from the federal Title I Supplemental School Improvement Program, part of the reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001. Grants must be used to supplement current school improvement efforts. Title I schools received grants based on progress on the four annual measurable objectives used to determine adequate yearly progress under Wisconsin’s plan to meet accountability requirements of federal education laws. The objectives are test participation, graduation and attendance criteria, and achievement levels in reading and mathematics.
