(84K) Recent interest in learning communities indicates appreciation for the value of interdisciplinary study. Learning communities are "supportive settings which require students to share the experience of learning with others" (Tinto, 1998). Research suggests that learning communities are useful for several reasons. They result in more intellectual interaction among students and between students and faculty members. They increase student involvement and create a sense of community. The programs show impressive results in terms of student academic achievement, student intellectual development, retention, and student motivation. Learning communities increase curricular coherence and provide ample opportunities for the integration and reinforcement of ideas. They promote an understanding of complex issues that cross disciplinary boundaries (Smith, 1991). One type of learning community is that created through linked courses.

PI-34 Roundtable: PK-12 Professional Development in International Education
July 29, 2004 UW-Milwaukee IGS partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and UW-Milwaukee Center for International Education to host a discussion on the role of UW institutions in providing guidance to PK-12 teachers interested in making international education the focus of their professional development plans (PDP) under PI-34. Specifically, we explored the possibility of creating an International Education Template that will serve as a PDP framework, supported by a menu of UW resources and programs teachers can use to customize their plans. The meeting provided an opportunity for individuals and groups to share information about their PI-34-related activities to date, and discuss the possibility of new collaborations. Text looks like the official version, but searches can only be performed in single chapters. The underscored "Folio" following each chapter title is a link to the chapter in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. Folio is best for searching. Text doesn't look like the official printed version and printing is difficult. Chapters are listed here under subject matter heads, corresponding to the former Titles, which were eliminated in the 1979 session of the Wisconsin Legislature. Searching by chapter titles for the desired subject matter is not a dependable method for finding all applicable law unless you know the book well, for the specific item you are looking for may not be in the chapter you select.

At the Capitol Collective bargaining Press room ... ONLINE SERVICES In response to a request from Senator Fred Risser, Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager issued an opinion finding that the federal government is requiring state governments to spend their own money to implement the law, in violation of federal statutes and the Constitution. The opinion encourages school boards and the state government to challenge the law in court. Johnson said the ESEA forces a one-size-fits-all approach on children, regardless of their learning differences and needs. "The education community is focused on what children really need: smaller classes, quality teaching, more parental involvement, and up-to-date books and materials.” Johnson said the opinion may encourage other states to stand up and demand that the law be fixed and funded. Wisconsin attorney general opinion may be national catalyst
An opinion issued last week by the Wisconsin attorney general opinion may be the catalyst for other states and school districts to challenge the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (misleadingly dubbed the "No Child Left Behind" act by the Bush administration). Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said last week that administration of the ESEA may be unconstitutional and illegal. She suggested that a lawsuit challenging the law could succeed. "This opinion shines a spotlight on the many problems with this law," Wisconsin Education Association Council President Stan Johnson said. "The ESEA amounts to an unfunded mandate imposed by the federal government. It could require the largest property tax increase in Wisconsin history." Johnson said the opinion should have national repercussions. "If the ESEA is administered illegally in Wisconsin, it's probably administered illegally in all states," he said. "This is the first ruling of its kind in the United States and sets a national precedent. Other states face the same crisis as Wisconsin. We urge school districts, the state government or other states to go to court and correct the injustices in this law." http://www.weac.org/news/update/2003-04/5-18/1.htm

Attorney General's Office
Peggy A. Lautenschlager, Attorney General Peggy A. Lautenschlager of Fond du Lac was elected Attorney General of Wisconsin in 2002. The first woman ever to hold this office, she leads the Department of Justice and its major divisions and offices, including the Divisions of Criminal Investigation and Drug Enforcement, the Division of Legal Services, the Division of Management Services, the Division of Law Enforcement and the Office of Crime Victim Services. To keep Wisconsin families safe and our communities secure, Attorney General Lautenschlager directs the services of State Department of Justice and its divisions in several ongoing major responsibilities: to represent the legal interests of the State and our citizens in the judicial process; to provide support and education in partnership with local law enforcement; to investigate and fight crime and narcotics at the state and local levels; to ensure the rights of crime victims; to protect the public in matters of consumer protection, environmental protection and Medicaid fraud, among other services in the public interest. Until April of 2001, Lautenschlager served as United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin. She was the chief federal law enforcement officer for the state’s westernmost 44 counties. During her almost eight-year tenure, she was responsible for the prosecution of federal criminal actions and litigation of civil matters involving the federal government.
