CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
Health Education
Wisconsin Statute (1999) requires schools to provide instruction in health education; however, grades, instructional time, and curriculum materials are local decisions. Statute (1997) requires the State Department of Public Instruction to establish a program on "health problems instruction" in order to provide assistance to local districts.
The Department of Public Instruction has published Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Health Education (1997), which are voluntary. Schools are not required to use a specific curriculum program.
Students in Wisconsin are not required to pass a statewide exam on health topics.
HIV, STD, and Pregnancy Prevention Education
Statute encourages instruction in sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and human growth and development, with all decisions as to grades in instruction time falling to the school districts. Statute (2001) also encourages instruction in grades kindergarten through 12, as appropriate, covering topics such as the discouragement of adolescent sexual activity; human sexuality, including natural family planning and HIV. The only requirement the state has placed on instruction is that local school districts that choose to offer such instruction must include marriage and parental responsibility as topics.

Cella eats purple loosestrife - only purple loosestrife, and we are helping Cella to eat up the purple loosestrife in Wisconsin through our program "See Cella Chow!" Purple loosestrife may look lovely, but the invasive plant is unwelcome in Wisconsin's wetlands. The plant, Lythrum salicaria , invades wetlands and out-competes the native vegetation, producing a dense monotypic stand. The plant is a hardy, flowering perennial that was introduced to North America from Europe. It was brought over in ship ballast and imported as a popular garden plant and a medicinal herb. It is reported to be useful for treating diarrhea, dysentery, sore throats, and leucorrhea, and for washing wounds. The Department of Natural Resources has a great page that will give you just about everything you need to know about identifying and controlling purple loosestrife.

Since 2001, training on the use of a groundwater sand tank model has been provided annually to teachers from 24 schools around the state. The teachers selected through a competitive program receive a one-day training session, a groundwater flow model and instructions on using it, classroom exercises designed to meet state teaching standards, and reimbursement for substitute teachers while the teachers are at the training. Since 2001, teachers from 120 schools have received training through this program and taken a free model back to their schools (see map

    Welcome Back!
    New Year, New Challenges
Welcome (or welcome back) to the University of Wisconsin-Madison! The TAA is the oldest graduate employee union in the country. Throughout our thirty-five-year history, we have led the nation in ensuring that quality higher education is affordable for all. We believe that good working conditions and fair wages and benefits for graduate employees will help ensure that the UW remains a top-tier university, able to recruit the best teaching assistants from around the world and from every walk of life. Thus, the union benefits not only graduate employees, but the entire university community and by extension, the citizens of Wisconsin as a whole. What's Happening? As many of you already know, the TAA, along with thousands of other state employees, has been engaged in a battle over the past 3-4 years to prevent cuts in wages and benefits, as well as indiscriminate destruction of public employee jobs, that are threatening to dramatically erode the quality of public services in Wisconsin. On campus, these cuts already threaten the UW's ability to offer the best quality education to undergraduates. Wisconsin citizens deserve better! US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements , loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information.
