Introduction
Cooperative Extension in Wisconsin is known for its extensive networks with communities and its excellent state, regional, and local programs. Recognizing this excellence, the State Legislature in late 1999 passed comprehensive planning legislation that included a role for Extension. Specifically, Extension was charged with offering planning programs to educate local policymakers about community planning and the state's new planning grants program. The comprehensive planning law, better known as "Smart Growth," while not mandating that all local governments must have a comprehensive plan in place by 2010, comes very close. Many local governmentstowns, villages, cities, and countiesare responding by hiring planners or planning firms that can prepare their comprehensive plan. Thus, this new law also has created a temporary, if not permanent, need for community planners in both the public and private sectors. This article focuses on a new University/Extension approach for land use planning education that blends classroom learning and teaching with community engagement. This model focuses on a team-based approach that integrates university and outreach education. Regional zoning board and plan commission workshops provide opportunities for teaching both traditional Extension clientele and university students about the realities of implementing land use tools and making informed community decisions.

The Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board developed a self-assessment called the Pharmacy SelfInspection Project. Its purpose was to be an effective continuing education and communication vehicle for pharmacists in a positive rather than adversarial environment. Eighty-six percent of the 1080 eligible managing pharmacists in Wisconsin participated in the statewide self-inspection process. Participants evaluated the Project favorably and agreed that the self-inspection should be conducted again in the future. Pharmacists who participated in the self-inspection were more compliant with pharmacy regulations, made more changes in their practice, and had more favorable attitudes towards the Project than those who did not participate.

About Us
Resources Publications Partners ... News STUDENTS AS EDUCATION DECISION-MAKERS Meaningful Student Involvement in Education Decision-Making By partnering with educators, students across the nation are making decisions about more than school dances and t-shirt designs. By applying their classroom learning and critical thinking, students make decisions about curricula, calendar year planning, and building design. They are joining boards of education at all levels, including local, district, and state boards. Education agencies engage students in their programs and engage students in grant making, school assessment, and planning. In a growing number of local schools, educators are allowing students to take a governing role in enforcing discipline policies, and using them to educate students. Students are also participating in establishing and enforcing codes of conduct, and making decisions about teacher and administrator hiring and firing. EXAMPLES Old School Practice/New School Thinking - In Anne Arundel County, Maryland students here have participated as voting members of the district board of education for more than 25 years. The student member is a high school senior who votes on all issues, including all areas of the school budget, discipline, and fiscal issues. In addition, every advisory, curriculum, and study committee, along with special task forces in the district includes students, working on everything from grading policies to alternative learning.

Civil Service Centennial (CSC) website - On June 17, 2005, Wisconsin will celebrate the centennial anniversary of its civil service law, which requires that state government hiring decisions be merit-based through the use of competitive examinations. Back in 1905, Governor Robert LaFollette signed one of the nation’s first civil service bills into law. Wisconsin’s law was also among the strongest because it covered the major portion of state personnel. Over the years, Governors and legislators have maintained that early commitment to progressive personnel policies and have made dramatic improvements in the law. Today, Wisconsin still ranks high among the states for having sound, effective and responsive human resources management practices. On this website, you can view a copy of the original law, hear from long-time state employees and learn about other events and exhibits that highlight the significance of this centennial.

Florida, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin Boards Adopt Resolution to Support ACA Lawsuit
The American Chiropractic Association's lawsuit against the Health Care Financing Administration's proposed Medicare+Choice regulations continues to garner support. The chiropractic state boards of Florida, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin have now joined the state boards of Alabama, Arizona, Idaho, California and North Carolina in announcing their official support of the ACA's federal lawsuit. The gist of the lawsuit is to thwart the new proposed Medicare+Choice regulations (Medicare's managed care program) that would permit MDs and DOs to give spinal manipulations to Medicare patients in lieu of chiropractors. The resolution says, in essence:

Overview The Allen-Bradley Company was founded in 1903 by Lynde and Harry Bradley in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (1) In 1942, Lynde died and turned his assets over to the creation of a charitable foundation, which culminated in the formation of the Lynde Bradley Foundation that year. The name was changed to the Allen Bradley Foundation in 1958, but was sold to Rockwell International in 1985. Some of the proceeds from the sale went to Bradley Foundation, which changed its name to the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. (2) Lynde and Harry were conservative philanthropists who believed in “American democratic capitalism” by way of “free representative government and private enterprise.” Thus, Bradley’s programs “support limited, competent government; a dynamic marketplace for economic, intellectual, and cultural activity; and a vigorous defense at home and abroad of American ideas and institutions.” (1) The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation is “the country’s largest and most influential right-wing organization.” (3) Along with John M. Olin Foundation, Sarah Scaife Foundation, and Smith Richardson Foundation, it is one of the “four sisters” described as the leading foundations of conservative philanthropy.
