Dear Parent,
Donna W.
Evergreen, Colorado
I went to Freedom Mountain Academy just four years ago, but the positive effects have already aided me in many aspects of my life. I learned to analyze and think critically about what I was taught; I learned to improvise and make things happen; and I learned how to survive with just the things I packed in my backpack.
From school, to work, to friends, I know I have not seen the last of the benefits from going to FMA. I really believe that this school is better than any high-school experience I have heard about.

Cutting-Edge Programs Integrating Academics, Mountain Adventure, and Farm Work

Collectively, our small staff has many decades of experience in developing high-quality, traditional education in combination with mountain-adventure skills and farm work. The program we have developed is unique; there are no similar programs that combine solid academics with farm work and mountaineering search-and-rescue training expeditions. This is truly a program that provides a broad-based learning environment.

Home Resource Links Alcohol And Drugs In 1996, the Wisconsin Clearinghouse began developing age appropriate facts sheets focused on bullying. The popularity of the facts sheets highlighted the unmet demand for resources surrounding the problem of bullying in schools. Building on this need, the Wisconsin Clearinghouse developed a research guide in 1999 that built on the growing body of information available about bullying behaviors and youth violence. Finally, we followed up with the Sticks n' Stones curriculum, developed through extensive research, initial facilitator training feedback, and continuing evaluation. The curriculum includes over 25 lessons and a game show for three different developmental levels. Through the training of over 260 facilitators in 2003 and 2004, we have been able to bring the program to schools and school districts throughout the state.
Troubled Teen Help
Energized by the success and enthusiastic reception of the program, the Wisconsin Clearinghouse has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and CESAs to make Sticks n' Stones more widely available to schools districts in Wisconsin. At least two staff members from eleven of the twelve CESAs have been qualified by the Wisconsin Clearinghouse as facilitator trainers. As resources are available, they will be offering Training of Facilitator workshops in the near future.

The aim of prevention approaches is to prevent the occurrence of, or minimize the damage from, human problems. The prevention framework dominates both the scientific study of human psychosocial problems and science-based interventions directed at ameliorating these problems. For example, this approach serves as the foundation for the American Psychological Association-endorsed prevention research model, the Institute of Medicine's recommendations for reducing mental disorders and the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention funding guidelines.

Because they comprise such a large waterway, they have played a vital role in the lives and histories of Indian peoples who have resided along their shores for millennia. Most Indian groups living in the Great Lakes region for the last five centuries are of the Algonkian language family. This includes such present-day Wisconsin tribes as the Menominee, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. Some tribessuch as the Stockbridge-Munsee and the Brothertownare also Algonkian-speaking tribes who relocated from the eastern seaboard to the Great Lakes region in the nineteenth century. The Oneida who live near Green Bay belong to the Iroquois language group and the Ho-chunk of Wisconsin are one of the few Great Lakes tribes to speak a Siouan language. Although there have been many differences in language and customs between different Indian tribes, Great Lakes Indian communities have had many things in common. They comprise a general culture called "Woodland" after its adaptation to North America's northeastern and southeastern woodlands. Woodland Indian societies have depended to a large degree on forest products for their survival, and Great Lakes Indians hunted, fished, gathered wild foods, and practiced agriculture for their subsistence. In many parts of the Great Lakes particularly northern Wisconsin Indians depended on wild rice as a dietary staple, while Indians in areas without wild rice generally cultivated corn. Where sugar maples grow, Great Lakes Indians established sugar-making camps in early spring and made sugar from tree sap.

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Cross Country Wins at Great American
Braving very early hours, the Cross Country team won the Small School’s Division at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, North Carolina. The meet draws many of the top team from across the country. FUMA was originally set to run in a division held later in the day but was moved due to Association constraints put on schools from Georgia and New York. The 7:30 am start time however, did not bother the FUMA runners as they placed four runners in the top 25. FUMA was led by the 2-3 finish of Axel Mostrag and Szymon Rola. Jonathan Buckland and David Johnson had outstanding finishes as well. Buckland was 11th and team captain David Johnson was 16th. Donte Brown rounded out the scoring with a 60th place finish as the Blue Devil harriers hung on to edge Providence Day School of Charlotte 91 to 99. The win marks the first invitational win for FUMA in Cross Country in over ten years. Posted by CPT Dan Thompson Monday, September 26, 2005 03:44 PM

From craggy buttes and mesas that once were islands rising from the wooded bed of a great glacial lake and grand marshes where bright red cranberries and mosses grow, Monroe County features sparkling brooks, rivers and streams flowing through rugged rock-walled valleys and gently rolling hills, wildflower prairies, brushlands and forests. The county's varied landscape and diverse plant communities provide habitat for an abundant variety of fish, game and wildlife including whitetail deer, wild turkeys, upland birds, waterfowl, squirrels, beavers, otters, fox, hawks, eagles, owls, herons, cranes, and songbirds. Included among the area's 19th Century immigrants was a large congregation of German-speaking Amish farm families, who continue to worship, live, and farm today as their pioneering ancestors did 150 years ago.
