31. Native American Tourism Of Wisconsin - NATOW

http://natow.org/education.html
Elders in traditional tribal societies played significant roles in passing down knowledge from one generation to the next. Some of the education was practical in nature. For example, an uncle might teach his nephew to hunt; an aunt might instruct her niece in beading or ribbon appliqué work. Other education was more philosophical in nature. Grandmothers, who often cared for very young children, told stories that conveyed tribal values and ideals. In this way they wove tribal ethics into the fabric of the community. Oratory
Oratory was another way knowledge was shared. The ability to speak well was highly regarded in Native communities. Those who also had the ability to speak from the heart were especially cherished. Many tribes had summer encampments where families would gather in familiar places to hear revered speakers. Much of the oratory involved three critical values: respect for the individual, respect for the community, and respect for the land. Often the messages were simple: take care of Mother Earth and share with others. The Boarding School Era
Individual Indians sometimes have mixed views of their boarding school experience. Some made life-long friendships at school; others met and married classmates. For some tribes, boarding schools represented a way to protect themselves from being exploited. The Oneida, for example, willingly sent two children from every community to boarding schools for a boarding school education. This would ensure that there would be Oneida who could read the treaties and advise the council. Overall, the boarding school era had tragic results for Indian communities. Entire generations lost fluency in their native languages and learned twisted histories of their people. However, the experience did not destroy tribal cultures as planned. Ironically, some of the Indian students educated at these boarding schools later used the tools they learned to press Indian land claims, treaty rights and sovereignty issues.

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

Private Schools
Private School Directory Advantages of Private Schools
Who should choose where ones child attends school? Who should choose the forms of schooling made available to families? These questions have been an issue for many years in and outside of our government and culture. We see the rich and their private schools and how they seem to be more advanced than those in public schools. We also see how private schools often have newer editions of text books. These are just a few many advantages of private prep schools. There seem to be different categories of children in public, private, and alternative schools. Here are two categories in private schools. The first is in the alternative or boarder schools; these are for struggling teens. There is a problem in the United States due to the complex and fast paced society in which we live. There are times when it becomes difficult for parents to cope with their troubled teenagers. Alternative boarder schools are private and if the teen needs help with any of the following conditions, then one should consider a private school. Here are a few situations in which a parent should consider a private school for a troubled teen.
• Failing in public schools
• Communication problems at school and home

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

http://www.mpm.edu/wirp/ICW-46.html
Languages
Most Woodland tribes spoke languages of the Algonkian language family. There are at least thirty Algonkian-speaking tribes in the Woodlands, and those in the Great Lakes region include the Ojibwe, Ottawa, Potawatomi, Menominee, Cree, Sauk, Fox, Kickapoo, Miami, Peoria, Illinois, Shawnee, Piankashaw, and Prairie Potawatomi. Outside the Great Lakes area, the people of Northeast, including the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, Mohegan, Pequot, Lenni Lenape (Delaware), and others also spoke Algonkian languages. While most Algonkian speaking tribes were part of the Woodland cultural pattern, the Blackfeet of Montana and Alberta also speak an Algonkian language. Besides Algonkian languages, the Woodlands also include languages of the Iroquoian and Siouan language families. In New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Quebec, and Ontario, the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, Susquehannock, Huron, Erie, Conestoga, Neutral, and other tribes spoke Iroquoian languages. The Santee Sioux and the Ho-chunk (Ho-chunk) speak languages of the Siouan family. With the advent of Europeans, some Indian languages fell into disuse or were used only within Indian homes and tribal communities. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, missionaries and government boarding schools stressed the abandonment of Indian languages and dependence on English. Children who went to boarding schools were forced to use English. Without reinforcement, they forgot their tribal languages or could only understand them and not speak them. Today, language teaching programs are important to Indian communities because language is seen as both an important part of traditional heritage and knowledge.

December 2003 Vol. 58 No. 8 Feature Article
Native American Achievement
by Nicole Bowman ederal, state and tribal governments are distinct entities of their own because of the sovereign status of Native American people and communities. The U.S. Department of Justice defines sovereignty as operating within a government-to-government relationship with federally recognized Indian tribes. This sovereign status makes Native Americans unique from other minority groups. Consequently, sovereign Native American nations are the only group that has the lawful capability to make policy and communicate on a government-to-government basis with other state and federal departments, which relates to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2002. Sovereignty issues affect the educational policies, as well as gaming and other matters, that cover Native Americans within the programs of state and federal government. The spirit of Native American sovereignty as it relates to education is best captured in a phrase that Native scholars and policy makers call "self-determination." The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 provides maximum Indian participation in the government and education of the Indian people; provides for the full participation of Indian tribes in programs and services conducted by the federal government for Indians; encourages the development of human resources of the Indian people; establishes a program of assistance to upgrade Indian education; and supports the right of Indian tribes to control their own education activities.
