Looking at Schools
By Boarding Schools in the USA http://www.boardingschoolsusa.com A guide for international students Do you like large schools or small schools? Are you most comfortable in a city, small town or countryside? Are you interested in attending a school that has a religious or military orientation? Would you like to attend a school that is only for boys or girls? These are some questions you must ask yourself before you begin your search for the right U.S. boarding school for you. Single-Sex Schools
Single-sex schools, those for boys only or girls only, are some of the oldest boarding schools in the U.S.A. As a student at one of these schools, you will have the chance to study in a less socially distracting atmosphere. For girls, single-sex schools can often provide greater opportunity to pursue leadership roles in both academic and extracurricular life. Military Schools
Military secondary schools have the same advantages as other private schools but also instill the values and importance of teamwork, dedication and discipline. Uniforms and drilling are often required.

What are Boarding Schools?
Boarding schools are independent, college preparatory schools that provide housing facilities for students and faculty. Boarding schools are sometimes referred to as "intentional communities" because the faculty and staff at boarding schools work very hard to create an environment for students that is safe, academically challenging, active, and fun. Boarding schools are well known for their academic excellence. With small class sizes, diverse curricula, and individual attention from teachers and advisors, the boarding school experience gives students many distinct advantages. Boarding school students acquire the abilities that help ensure success in college and in life. There are many different types of boarding schools. If you decide boarding school is for you, the first step to choosing a school is to consider what type of school will best serve the student. All Boarding

Boarding Schools
Beginning in the nineteenth century, boarding schools played a fundamental role in the programs designed by the U.S. government to foster the assimilation of native peoples into the mainstream of American society. Reformers and politicians who favored the policy of reservation allotment also advanced the concept of placing Indian children in residential schools where they would speak English, learn a vocation, and practice farming. Advocates of boarding schools argued that industrial training, in combination with several years of isolation from family, would diminish the influence of tribalism on a new generation of American Indians. For fifty years after the first federally administered residential school was established in 1879 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, thousands of Native American children and youth were sent to live, work, and be educated in the schools. Prior to Carlisle, most American Indians had little experience with the boarding-school concept. Some had attended mission schools, and three unique institutions had developed earlier in the century: the Choctaw Academy and the Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries. The Choctaw Academy in Kentucky, founded in 1825, was a male boarding school that Indian and white children attended. The academy was funded by proceeds from Choctaw land cessions in the Southeast during the 1820s. By 1851, the Cherokees in Oklahoma had opened male and female seminaries near Tahlequah to educate members of their nation. Cherokee students studied a curriculum that was patterned after that of Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts.

Kellogg, Minnie
(1880-c. 1949) Oneida activist and writer Laura Minnie Cornelius Kellogg was born on the Oneida Reservation near Green Bay, Wisconsin, the daughter of Adam Poe Cornelius and Celicia Bread Cornelius, farmers. A descendant of central New York State Oneida Indians who followed an Indian missionary, the Reverend Eleazar Williams, into the Wisconsin territory in 1822, she was a baptized member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles. Included in her prominent lineage were Daniel Bread, a major nineteenth-century Oneida chief in New York and Wisconsin who was known for his powerful oratorical skills, and Skenandore, the last of the New York Oneida chiefs, who was one of the tribe's leaders during its migration to Wisconsin. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Kellogg avoided attending distant Indian boarding schools. She was educated in the 1890s at Grafton Hall, an Episcopal boarding school largely for non-Indians located at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. In the first decade of the twentieth century, she studied at Barnard College, Cornell University, the New York School of Philanthropy (later the Columbia University School of Social Work), Stanford University, and the University of Wisconsin, although she never received degrees from any of these institutions. One of the best Indian linguists of her generation, Kellogg had a superior command of Oneida and Mohawk as well as English. But she gained national attention through her spellbinding oratory and her eloquent writing skills. As a public speaker, she told of the eighteenth-century League of the Iroquois, the lessons and wisdom of Indian elders, and the overriding concerns of the Iroquois to win back their lands, which she insisted had been taken fraudulently by New York State and by land speculators. She was equally accomplished with a pen, devoting herself to writing on behalf of Progressive Era reform causes such as women's rights as well as writing political tracts on Indian issues; she also wrote plays and short stories. Her writings include
