School-to-Home Collaboration Tool Makes Education a Team Effort for Wisconsin District
By Nick White
December 2003 - Applications
We live in a connected world. With tools like e-mail, instant messaging and cell phones, we are more connected now than ever before. In education, however, we have not made the most of the communication tools available to us, especially when it comes to connecting with parents. In the School District of Kettle Moraine in Wales, Wis., we did not experience an overwhelming demand from parents for more access to information about their children. Yet, we felt that school-to-home communication was a priority we needed to proactively address, since parents play a vital role in the educational process. Our suburban school district has 4,355 students enrolled in four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one alternative school. Back in 2001, the district determined it needed to move to a new student administrative system. We had previously implemented school and financial management software from Pearson Digital Learning. As we considered our options, we decided to continue our relationship with Pearson because they offered a suite of tools that could work together seamlessly with the software we already had in place. So, we implemented the SASIxp student information system, InteGrade Pro online gradebook software and the ParentCONNECTxp school-to-home collaboration tool. We chose to implement the ParentCONNECTxp software in three stages at our middle and high schools. During the first stage of our implementation, parents could visit the password-protected Web site to view their child's schedules, report cards, daily and period attendance, course history (high school only), as well as demographic and health/immunization data. The Web site gives parents the most up-to-date information available on their child without creating extra work for teachers, administrators or staff. The system simply draws information from the student administrative system, thereby eliminating the need for duplicate data entry.

NUMBER 207 THE NEWSPAPER OF EDUCATION RIGHTS APRIL 2003 At Wisconsin High School, Students Behave As They Eat
APPLETON, WI - The Central Alternative High School in Appleton instituted a new healthy lunch program in 1997, administered by a private group called Natural Ovens. Suddenly, the revolving discipline plans, metal detectors, security officers, and all the other tactics schools currently use to deal with rowdy students were no longer needed. Could the answer to public schools' discipline woes really lie in what students eat? According to a newsletter called Pure Facts, eliminating behavior problems was as simple for Central Alternative's principal LuAnn Coenen as eliminating junk food. School lunch menus changed drastically. All the soda and junk food vending machines were removed. Fast-food hamburgers, fries, and burritos were tossed out, and replaced with healthy alternatives including fresh salads, meats, whole grain breads, and fruits. The results have been impressive. Pure Facts reports that "grades are up" at the high school, "truancy is no longer a problem, arguments are rare, and teachers are able to spend their time teaching."

"Making a difference in the lives of Wisconsin Veterans" Home State Veterans Benefits Employment Assistance Troops to Teachers (TTT)
Troops to Teachers (TTT) is a joint program of the U.S. Departments of Defense and Education that assists departing active duty military personnel, veterans and certain members/retirees who are associated with the reserve components, to transition to new careers as public school teachers. The program provides information, referral and financial assistance to eligible individuals who are interested in gaining certification and employment as teachers. These services are provided through a network of state offices across the country and a national office in Pensacola, Florida. Federal legislation provides TTT enrollees pursuing requirements for teaching certification, who agree to teach in high need school districts, a stipend of up to $5,000 to offset the cost of teacher training programs. Those willing to teach in schools with a high percentage of students from low income families may receive a $10,000 bonus. People will not be able to take advantage of both the stipend and the bonus. In Wisconsin the TTT Office is located within the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) in Madison. Contact information is provided

... Spotlighting school forest champions "T urn it on its back. That way it won’t scratch you,” one of the college-aged “Woodsies” told the student holding the Blanding’s turtle. The turtle had just been captured by Fort McCoy biologist Tim Wilder after students located it using radio telemetry. We were tracking and capturing radio-tagged turtles as part of the West Salem school forest overnight program for seventh graders. These 50 students are just a few of the school-aged children and adults enjoying exciting opportunities at school forests across the state.
Home of the school forest tradition
Wisconsin has a long and proud school forest tradition. The school forest idea was borrowed from Australia by Dean Russell of the UW College of Agriculture assisted by Wakelin “Ranger Mac” McNeel, state 4-H leader, and Fred Trenk, a UW-Extension Forester. Russell had spearheaded legislation to set aside community forests. The Community Forest Law of 1927 allowed schools, organizations and municipalities to own property specifically managed for forestry. The first school forests in the United States were registered in Wisconsin the following year at Laona, Wabeno and Crandon.

Miracle At A Wisconsin High School
A revolution has occurred. It's taken place in the Central Alternative High School. The kids now behave. The hallways aren't frantic. Even the teachers are happy. The school used to be out of control. Kids packed weapons. Discipline problems swamped the principal's office. But not since 1997. What happened? Did they line every inch of space with cops? Did they spray valium gas in the classrooms? Did they install metal detectors in the bathrooms? Did they build holding cells in the gym? Afraid not. In 1997, a private group called Natural Ovens began installing a healthy lunch program. Huh? Fast-food burgers, fries, and burritos gave way to fresh salads, meats "prepared with old-fashioned recipes," and whole grain bread. Fresh fruits were added to the menu. Good drinking water arrived.

Despite small class size and creative instruction, the learning environment of Appleton Central Alternative High School (Appleton, Wisconsin) was terrible during its first year. The school had been established in 1996 to help disruptive, truant, and other at-risk students who could not fit in at traditional area high schools. Students were "rude, obnoxious, and ill-mannered," according to Greg Bretthauer, the present dean of students. Discipline problems and weapon violations required that a policeman be on school premises at all times. Then, in 1997, Appleton Central Alternative (ACA) underwent a transformation. Pop machines were removed from the school, and a new nutrition program was implemented. The program was developed and supported by Paul and Barbara Stitt, owners of Natural Ovens of Manitowoc. Paul Stitt, a biochemist founded Natural Ovens Bakery. His wife, company president Barbara Reed Stitt, PhD, wrote Food and Behavior. She had developed a nutrition program while working as a probation officer that had decreased the number of repeat offenders among her clientele. Natural Ovens contributed over $100,000 during 5 years to construct a kitchen, provide food service equipment, employ two cooks and a student assistant, and pay any excess food bills so that the school could provide breakfast and lunch to its students (who are on a half-day, 3-hour schedule).

Alternative Teacher Compensation. ERIC Digest Number 142.
Teacher compensation is gaining renewed attention in state legislatures and school district offices as policymakers seek to attract and retain qualified individuals to teaching and also explore creative ways to promote higher educational and professional standards. This Digest examines various alternative methods of teacher compensation currently proposed or in practice in school districts around the country.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT STANDARD FOR TEACHER COMPENSATION?
The single salary schedule, which pays individual teachers on the basis of their years of experience and educational units or degrees, has been in place nationwide for at least 50 years (Odden 2000). Attempts to unseat the single salary schedule have largely foundered. The 1980s saw significant experimentation with merit-pay and career-ladder systems, which rewarded teachers financially based on performance reviews and their willingness to take on extra responsibilities. The seemingly subjective nature of administrator-led reviews created resentment among teachers and their unions and was "at odds with the team-based, collegial nature of well-functioning schools" (Odden). Odden asserts that virtually none of the merit-pay systems enacted prior to the 1990s survives today.
