Talk is on wide appeal of children's literature
CLEVELAND Winnie the Pooh has become more than a storybook character. Pooh bear and other characters from children's literature are now the stuff that drives the multi-billion dollar toy business. Gillian Brown, a professor of English from the University of Utah, will visit Case Western Reserve University talk about "Books without Borders: The Reach of Children's Literature" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1 in 206 Clark Hall. The talk is free and open to the public. Sponsors are the Society for Critical Exchange and CWRU's Schubert Center for Child Development , the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities , and the Department of English The Society for Critical Exchange, founded in 1975 as a national scholarly organization devoted to collaborative interdisciplinary research, invited Brown as part of its Cultural Aspects of Globalization Lecture Series. Brown will explore how characters from the pages of children's literature emerge in new forms and take on a life beyond the country of their origin as well as how children's books generate material paraphernalia such as pictures, figurines, dolls, toys, and games; invent new realms of existence such as Wonderland, Never-Never Land, and Narnia; and affect children worldwide as they provide an international pantheon of child familiars. By looking at the material, fantastic, and universal appeal of classic children's storybook characters as Brer Rabbit, Peter Rabbit, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland, Brown will show how one can appreciate the importance of childhood culture and the impact that books have on it.

We have, in fact, a pretty good collection of children's literature. It will be found in the CURRICULUM COLLECTION in the Main Stacks. This is a room whose entrance is at the far end of Rows 52-53. We have virtually all of the Newbery and Caldecott winners, and, for the last 10 years or so have been receiving all of the winners and runners up in a number of different children's book award programs, like Coretta Scott King, American Library Association's Notable Book/Best Book listings, Boston Globe, Scott O'Dell, and more. It all adds up to a pretty substantial set. And, of course, there are good collections in the local public libraries. All of these books are listed in OSCAR with Location listed as Orradre Curriculum. If you want to browse this collection, go in the Curriculum Room and look at the books with call numbers beginning PZ.

http://www.ucalgary.ca/UofC/eduweb/writing/essay1.htm
A Sample Essay The following essay is based on the sample web outline and sample non-traditional outline . Of course, this final version has gone through several drafts and much revision. You should expect to put great effort into turning a rough outline into a polished essay. The main points from the original outline are highlighted in blue, and the thesis is highlighted in red. (Dis)empowering the Child: A Critique of Children's Literature (Introduction: identifies the focus of the essay and introduces key theory (post-colonialism).) The adult authorship of books for children is a practice that society has accepted willingly throughout the history of children's literature. Most do not question whether the adult is misappropriating a child's voice or perception ; rather, people feel that every author should have the liberty to write a children's book because he/she has experienced childhood. Furthermore, some would argue that the adult has an even better understanding of childhood than most children do because he/she is now beyond that stage and can therefore make more astute and objective observations. Only recently have we begun to ask whether an adult's memory of "childhood" is valid or reliable.

On the occasion of his well-deserved awarding of the Ted Hippie Service Award, John Mason was kind enough to give us a quick autobiography and answer a few questions: I was born and raised in England and entered the publishing field there. My first job was as an "educational fieldworker" at Penguin Books in the early 1970's. I traveled the country visiting schools and colleges, setting up exhibits, and writing reports and feedback to our editors and marketing people. After that I became Schools Marketing Manager, responsible for marketing paperbacks to schools. This was when the legendary Kaye Webb was running the "Puffin Club," which had a huge influence on readership of children's books. In the mid '70s I left my job, traveled to India, then moved to the USA where I lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for two years, and worked for an educational magazine publisher as an advertising sales manager.

Romance and Amber Spyglass Sun, 3 Dec 2000 Several thoughts on this: 1. Lyra and Will are not truly Archetypal characters they possibly
should be in this epic, but they are NOT. They are very much unique
individuals. They cannot be described by one or even a few qualities:
"simpleton," the "good," the "trustworthy," etc. A"trustworthy murderer"
and a "truthtelling liar," how unique and totally anti-archetypal! 2. Is it possible that the FALL is not about having SEX? The original
FALL was not about sexual "activities," it was about gaining the KNOWLEDGE of the act. So, can we allow the possibility (of course, I understand that there are a LOT of symbolism that can be interpreted otherwise) that all that happened was their BUDDING AWARENESS of the romantic feelings, the sexual attraction, the longing, toward each other? I would like to think that the KISS and the CUDDLING is all that happened. And the DUST attracted to them is explained as "consciousness" a consciousness of

To my alarm I soon realized that I was giving my daughter a self-help allegory in how to become an addict. Yes, Edward Pooh, also known as Winnie the Pooh, or Pooh for short, is an addict. Why isn't this on the cover of every Disney-equivalent of Star magazine. In this fine episode, Pooh happens upon his friend Eeyore, who is clearly clinically depressed, still undiagnosed by the forest quacks, possibly actual ducks. Eeyore is upset because it's his birthday and EVERYONE forgot. Of course. It's a classic cycle of depression, self-hate, and societal rejection.

And The Athenaeum called it a "stiff, overwrought story." Luckily, its illustrator pulled in a positive note or two, so much so that the Times hardly mentioned the text in their review.
