Twentieth-Century Children's Literature: 1890-1970
Back to More Children's Books
Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality It was left to Sigmund Freud to point out to a disbelieving world the self-evident fact of children's sexuality: 'If mankind had been able to learn from a direct observation of children, these three essays ... could have remained unwritten.' And it is no coincidence that he wrote them in these years, from 1890 to the 1920s, years in which children's literature was most heavily invested in denial. (Julia Briggs, in Children's Literature , p.170) Henry James: What Masie Knew (1897) and The Turn of the Screw (1898); profound and disturbing accounts of childhood written for adults. Main Library. Frank Baum

AA Milne s winnie the pooh was another children s classic with a panoply ofinnocuous characters such as Christopher Robin, Eeyore and pooh.

Literary Influences of Syd Barrett Part of what makes Barrett and his music so unique was the amazing variety of influences he drew upon. Not only from music, but in literature as well. Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows' was most likely Syd Barrett's most influential childhood book. The title of the Pink Floyd's 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' was drawn from Chapter VII of this book. This book is perhaps the very touchstone for understanding the intricacies of Barrett's work, and some of the byzantine mechanisms of his creativity. The characters, the duality between the frightening Wild Wood and the idyllic river, and the lush language Grahame utilises are all key Barrett influences. A must-read for all Barrett enthusiasts. Hilaire Belloc , a famous stodgy old man of letters, wrote a lot of books, essays and poems during his life, but he is perhaps best known for his children's book, 'Cautionary Verses', published in 1907. It's a strange book, as only those classic English children's books can be. The stories are little rhymes meant to frighten children into obedience. The things that happen to these kids for disobeying are really horrific. They get eaten by tigers, burnt alive, die of terrible illnesses or get thumped behind the ear....all for misbehaving. The opening story, 'Jim Who Ran Away From His Nurse and was Eaten by a Lion' provided 'Matilda Mother' with its original lyrics. 'Matilda', another story from the book, provided the title of the song. Cliff Jones, author of 'Echoes: The Story Behind Every Pink Floyd Song' noted that when Syd and the Floyd used to perform 'Matilda Mother' in Autumn 1966 at places like the All Saint's Hall, the song began like this:

Nothing to Lose
Nothing to Lose by Alex Flinn (0-06-051750-6) This novel is being lauded as one of the top ones this year, and I can certainly see why. Through a series of flashbacks, readers discover Michael's story, the story behind his stepfather's murder. The flashbacks reveal the beatings his mother took, the helplessness Michael felt, and the reason why he ran away to work at a carnival. But now Michael is back in his home town where his mother is on trial for his stepfather's murder. He has the choice to run again or to stay. Michael is a very believable and vivid character. The abuse is portrayed through his eyes, and readers understand his powerlessness and fear. Very well done and real. Recommend this one to teenage boys. They will enjoy that Michael is a football player who faces a lot more than quarterback issues.

About Us About Suite University Apply to become a Course Writer Contact Us Member Login Username: Password: Introduction Overview Free Lessons Resources Free Course: Getting a Grip on Children's Lit Lesson 4: The First Years of School- 4-6 Years Old Heroes and books for boys Humor: Who doesn’t like to laugh? The more outrageous and absurd the book, the more enjoyable it is. One great example is The Dumb Bunnies by Sue Denim. This family of bunnies couldn’t be more topsy-turvy! They hang Christmas Stockings for Halloween, put ketchup on watermelon, and go roller-skating in the lake. This book is really goofy, but little boys enjoy it immensely. Other great choices include George and Martha by James Marshall, and any of the fractured fairy tales mentioned in the previous section. Action/Adventure: Boys love stories with a heroic character who does something adventurous and fantastic. Whether it be facing monsters, or seeking buried treasure, boys love an exciting story. Is there something happening in the book? Is it exciting and attention grabbing? One of my favorites is an old classic called Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain by Edward Ardizzone. Tim has always dreamt of being a sailor, and when the opportunity arises to stowaway on a steamer ship, he jumps at it. What ensues is the adventure of a lifetime for Tim, stormy seas and sinking ship included. There were a whole series of Little Tim books, but this is one of the few titles currently in print.

She was born in Scotland but moved to London to go to university and has lived and worked in London for ten years. She is married with a son and a baby daughter. She is keen on yoga, politics, modern motherhood and organic food. Three in a Bed is her first novel. Carmen's Book: Three in A Bed Bella Browning is a successful career woman who wants a baby but doesn't seem totally committed to the idea of being faithful. We watch her almost throw everything away for the sake of a quick fling, wrestle with new motherhood and chart her progression from woman who seemingly has it all, to woman who can't get it together to brush her hair in the morning. A must-read for anyone with children - or contemplating them! Readers' Comments: Bella is another one of those chicklit characters you don't wholly like and it's quite satisfying seeing her take a much needed fall. Still, she becomes like one of those friends that always have some titillating gossip - even though you don't always approve.

Charlotte Huck and her colleagues (1987) have defined literature as "...the imaginative shaping of life and thought into the forms and structures of language." If life, thought and/or imagination are missing, the language alone will not suffice.
Appreciation may be explained as the capacity to understand, learn from, and above all enjoy literary works. It involves the ability to read and respond creatively, sharing the author's role by drawing on one's own imagination and experience. The text enters the reader as the reader enters the text. Their worlds are joined.
Two basic approaches to teaching literature at any level are the "structural" (traditional literary analysis) and the "reader response" approaches. While they may be viewed as opposites, they are more productively regarded as complementary. Structural analysis provides the terms and concepts that help readers interpret and discuss literature, while reader response emphasizes the integrated experience an individual has with a text, with the reader's personal response having primacy over formal knowledge of textual characteristics. A strong case can be made for beginning with reader response. If done without first establishing the personal relationship by which the reader breathes life into a text, formal analysis is likely to resemble an autopsy.

English Costumes of Literary Characters: Christopher Robin
Figure 1.Disney after caving in to the spimisters and having Christopher wear red sneakers have come out with another set of books with him back in strap shoes.
The Author
A.A. Milne writes in his autibiography that "It seemed to me almost that my father had got to where he was by climbing on my infant shoulders." In fact, A.A. Milne was already a successful playwright and humorist in 1924 when, during a rainy holiday in Wales, he wrote a whimsical collection of verses about his then 4-year-old son.
The Books
The book, When We Were Very Young , and three later volumesfeaturing the adventures of a wide-eyed child named Christopher Robin and his guileless teddy bear companion Winnie-the-Poohwould sell thousands of copies, be translated into more than 30 languages.
The Real Christopher Robin
Just like Little Lord Fauntleroy, there was a real Christopher Robin. And like Vivian Burnett
Figure 2.Christopher in this Shepard drawing wears a red gingam smock with matchinmg short pants and sandals without socks.
The Illustrations
Virtually all of what we know about the clothes wore by Christopher Robin comes from the delightful drawing of Ernest Shepherd. Christopher's drawings are not mentioned in the story lines. Shepard draws Christopher wearing ginham smocks, short pants, and strap shoes. Often he draws him playin without socks. A few times Cristopher wears "Wellies" (Wellington boots).
