Aonix Products ObjectAda
Software lifecycle development encompasses a sequence of mandatory phases that all developers must address. ObjectAda meets the developer's needs during the implementation and deployment stages, and establishes a framework for managing application maintenance. Aonix is a recognized leader in supplying tools for applications that demand the highest level of reliability. Originally based on the Ada language, the ObjectAda development environment that Aonix customers use today has grown to much more than just an Ada environment. ObjectAda provides an extremely effective solution for developing portable, highly reliable, and efficient applications. Based on Ada 95, the first and only internationally standardized object-oriented programming language (ANSI/ISO), ObjectAda is a truly multi-lingual environment. ObjectAda allows you to easily integrate Ada components with components written in Java, C, C++, FORTRAN, and other languages for multi-lingual development. And ObjectAda works directly with commercial off-the-shelf libraries, components, and APIs. The ObjectAda integrated development environment (IDE) is the fastest and most open environment ever available for Ada technology. The Windows-based IDE is modeled after Microsoft Visual C++, the most widely used IDE on the market. The UNIX-based IDE is designed to be fully compliant with the Common Desktop Interface (CDE) standard, and is identical across all UNIX hosts. For any platform, ObjectAda features a fast, open library model that is fully compatible with other languages, high-speed intelligent compilation, hyperlinked semantic browsers, syntax-directed editors, integration with configuration managers, and instant access to standard APIs. On all platforms, application generation is optimized for reliable, seamless execution of thread-aware applications within a safe and secure operational environment.

Operating-System Comparisons
The logic of Unix's design choice stands out more clearly when we contrast it with other operating systems. Here we will attempt only a design overview; for detailed discussion of the technical features of different operating systems. Figure 3.1. Schematic history of timesharing. Figure 3.1 Solid arrows indicate a genetic relationship or very strong design influence (e.g., a later system with an API deliberately reverse-engineered to match an earlier one). Dashed lines indicate significant design influence. Dotted lines indicate weak design influence. Not all the genetic relationships are acknowledged by the developers; indeed, some have been officially denied for legal or corporate-strategy reasons but are open secrets in the industry.
VMS
VMS is the proprietary operating system originally developed for the VAX minicomputer from Digital Equipment Corporation. It was first released in 1978, was an important production operating system in the 1980s and early 1990s, and continued to be maintained when DEC was acquired by Compaq and Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard. It is still sold and supported in mid-2003, though little new development goes on in it today. VMS is surveyed here to show the contrast between Unix and other CLI-oriented operating systems from the minicomputer era.

ReactOS is an Open Source effort to develop a quality operating system that is compatible with Microsoft Windows(R) applications and drivers. License ReactOS is licensed under the GNU General Public License Relationship with the WINE project ReactOS has always planned to work with the WINE project to share as much programming effort as possible. This will mainly concern User Mode DLLs and will happen once ReactOS's Kernel Mode areas are more complete, as those areas form the underlying infrastructure. Other areas of cooperation lie in applications and testing suites. Supporting other System Applications The Microsoft Windows(R) architecture allows for subsystems, as does the ReactOS architecture. A subsystem is an implementation of the APIs of another operating system, allowing ReactOS to run applications from other systems. We are already looking at subsystems for: Java OS/2 and DOS and possibly others in the future.

It turned out that we have an opportunity to get familiar with the new version of Windows Mobile operating system before the official announcement and long before the appearance of first devices based on the new OS. In the Internet there appeared the version of this OS for HTC Himalayas (the Qtek 2020, the I-mate Pocket-PC and others, we tested it on the Qtek 2020). Right away we’d stipulate that we won’t tell you in the forum or by e-mail where to download the update of the new operating system and how to install it. However we consider it our duty to introduce opportunities of the new operating system to our readers. The current version isn’t a final one, just preliminary. But taking it into account we can have an idea of the version, which will come out in the 2Q 2005. At the moment we have an opportunity to draw attention of developers to errors and weak points, perhaps they will listen to it, and improvements will be taken into account in the final version. Naturally, as soon as the final version of this operating system appears, we’ll publish the updated review.

The Stratus ftServer W Series family supports both Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows Server 2003. Reliability improvements in newer Windows releases bring a level of reliability to the operating system that is consistent with the system reliability of the fault-tolerant ftServer W Series systems . Stratus enhances the standard Windows operating system environment with unique failsafe software features , but does not modify the base Windows operating system or compromise compatibility in any way. All ftServer W Series models have passed the testing required to receive the "Designed for Microsoft Windows" logo and are listed on Microsoft's Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). This testing ensures that ftServer W Series systems are fully compatible with the Windows operating system and all Windows-compatible applications. All Stratus-enhanced device drivers are also tested and receive digital signatures to guarantee full Windows compatibility. Stratus will pre-install Windows Server 2003 at the factory if the software is purchased from Stratus. Optionally, customers may purchase their own copy of Windows and use the ftServer System Software CD to install the Windows operating system along with Stratus failsafe software enhancements. Stratus tests and integrates Microsoft Windows Service Packs as they are released and also provides testing and guidance for use of Microsoft Hotfixes.
