Introduction
Early computers lacked operating systems (see History of operating systems ). A human operator would manually load and run programs. When programs were developed to load and run other programs, it was natural to draw their name from the human job they replaced. Most current usage of the term "operating system" today, by both popular and professional sources, refers to all the software that is required in order for the user to manage the system and to run third-party application software for that system. That is, the common understanding includes not only the low-level "kernel" that interacts directly with the hardware, but also libraries required by applications as well as basic programs to manipulate files and configure the system. The exact delineation between the operating system and application software is not precise, however, and is occasionally subject to controversy. For example, one of the key questions in the

Wednesday June 16, 2005 Over the past few weeks we've been working simultaneously on two systems projects; one, resolving a problem in our subscriptions interface; the other moving all of our email and back end systems over to a new platform, in part to more effectively deal with the massive amount of spam email that we receive, and to give us the right base to deliver new trading tools.
Coming soon... Its been a long slog, interupted by a variety of issues but we are finally near turning the corner on this project - the first set of updates will be implemented over the the next two weeks following a hardware upgrade and a clean bill of health for our servers. In the meantime while Mike slogs through these problems in the off hours, during the day we've fully exploited the overall market rally, and perhaps more importantly, the energy rally that we started to buy on May 17

    94. Microsoft Windows And Other Operating Systems
There are better alternatives to Microsoft windows.
    http://microsoft.toddverbeek.com/os.html
Operating Systems Microsoft Windows isn't the only operating system for personal computers, or even the best... it's just the best-marketed. Its inconsistent behavior and the interface that changes with every version are the main reasons people find computers difficult to use. Microsoft adds new bells and whistles in each release, and claims that this time they've solved the countless problems in the previous versions... but the hype is never really fulfilled . The upgrade prices are blatant, documented gouging, which serve primarily to keep the cash flowing to Microsoft to subsidize their efforts to take over other markets. And a slew of intrusive "features" in Windows XP benefit Microsoft at the expensive of both your privacy and your freedom. So rather than switching to WinXP, consider switching to something better . There's an exciting array of interesting operating systems out there, and the overall quality of them is stronger than ever. If you can't say NO to Windows (which is understandable in many cases), you can still say NO MORE. The simplest alternative to Windows XP is a previously-installed version of Windows . Windows XP isn't a simple upgrade like 98 or ME was; it's actually a different operating system, which has compatibility problems with some pre-XP software, and won't work properly with a lot of older hardware, so installing the XP "upgrade" is a risk. And it'll be slower. Besides, most new software will still work on the earlier versions of Windows. Even if the software box brags "for Windows XP", that's because Microsoft
