Windows Vista: a first look Robert Vamosi July 28, 2005 Microsoft has more work to do on its new operating system, but this first beta suggests that Windows Vista will be on a par with Linux and Apple Mac OS X. Microsoft has released Windows Vista Beta 1 (formerly known as Windows Longhorn) to a select group of testers. Microsoft's mantra (or advertising line) for Windows Vista is 'Confidence, clarity, and connection'. For you and me, that means a promise of greater stability and security within the OS, better graphics throughout, and an enhanced ability to share documents and files, including built-in P2P services. The Beta 1 build is a programmers' build that is, Microsoft wants to make sure that developers know how the new OS works before they put the finishing touches on the overall look and feel of Windows Vista. A second beta is expected by the end of 2005. Final shipping of the new Windows operating system won't occur until the second half of 2006. In Windows Vista, Microsoft borrows a lot of clever ideas from its competitors.

Microsoft unveils new Windows operating system
GALLERY (CNN) Microsoft gave a sneak peek of its highly touted Windows XP operating system on Tuesday. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates introduced the new desktop software at a Seattle museum dedicated to the late guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. The event at the Experience Music Project offered a glimpse into the design and capability of the new Windows for home and work, previously code-named Whistler. "Windows XP takes the power and adaptability of the PC to a new level," Gates said in a statement. Built on the enhanced Windows 2000 engine, Windows XP will do a better job of uniting traditionally disconnected software, devices and services like the Internet, Microsoft said. CNNfn Analysts discuss the new Microsoft operating system MESSAGE BOARD Operating systems Windows XP will introduce a brand new look as well for the PC desktop. The design will be the most significant update to the Windows interface since Windows 95, Microsoft said.

Compatibility of Symantec consumer products with Microsoft Windows operating systems Situation:

You need to know if your Symantec consumer software will run under Microsoft Windows.
Solution:
When a new operating system is produced after Symantec software was released, new software compatibility issues sometimes occur. Because of these issues, not all current Symantec products are certified to run under every Windows operating system.
The table that follows shows which versions of Symantec consumer software are compatible with which operating systems. Blue text indicates a link to additional information for that product. We suggest that you obtain any documents that pertain to the Symantec products that you want to install.
Important information
  • A product can be compatible without being certified. Both compatible products and certified products are fully tested for functional stability and operability. Products marked "compatible" are tested by Symantec, and products marked "certified" are tested by an independent testing company. Any product marked "certified" is also "compatible."
  • The use of "2000" in a Symantec product name refers to the year 2000 and is not intended to indicate compatibility with Windows 2000. The designation is used to indicate the relative age of the product and to indicate whether one Symantec product is from the same "model year" as another.
