    Alternative Energy Investment
Mark Tran reports in the Guardian on the state of the alternative energy investment market.
The past few months have seen record levels of investment in alternative energy amid fears that high oil prices are here to stay.
Last month, Impax, an investment group focusing on alternative energy, successfully raised €60m (£40m) in the first tranche for a new equity fund, New Energy. The new fund, that will target renewable energy projects mainly in western Europe, aims to grow to at least €125m within 12 months.
With the current interest in green energy - wind, solar and biomass - New Energy should have no trouble reaching its target. Alternative energy as an investment is currently very much in vogue. What was notable about New Energy was that it attracted interest from some big financial players.
The British Airways pension fund, Co-operative Insurance Society and South Yorkshire Pensions Authority all provided finance for the fund.

    Wind Power
    Facts
x Electricity from wind Wind power is one of the most promising and cost-effective renewable energy technologies available today. Worldwide there are more than 13,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power installed. In the 1980s, California purchased large quantities of wind power, investments that provided the manufacturing and operating experience needed to bring the cost of wind power down to affordable levels. There are now 1600 MW of wind power installed in California, and another 1000 MW installed in other parts of the country. Combined, this is enough to generate electricity for over 750,000 homes. The number of wind farms in the US has increased substantially in the last few years. In 1999, there were 730 MW of new wind farms installed. The US Department of Energy projects that by the end of 2001, the US will have 4600 MW of wind power, enough to generate electricity for 1.7 million homes. Due to the increasing number of wind farms, the price for wind power will fall. Currently, wind power costs between 3 and 6 cents per kWh to generate. By 2005, it is expected to be closer to 2 cents, making it one of the cheapest resources available.
How wind plants produce electricity Wind plants use large blades to catch the wind, turning rotors that produce electricity. Just as fossil-fueled plants use steam or combustion gases to turn electricity-producing rotors, wind plants use many wind turbines, often assembled on a large single wind site called a wind farm, to generate electricity. The modern wind farm may consist of as many as 100-500 wind turbines connected to the electric transmission grid.

    139. Wind From The Sun Power Plant: Similar To Solar Chimney
Information about a new technology using the sun's energy to generate wind power.
    http://www.windfromthesun.com/
A Hybrid System: Wind From The Sun is a new technology for obtaining power from the sun and wind. This hybrid system turns the sun's light into heat, then uses that heat to create a wind within a horizontal large-diameter pipe. The wind inside the pipe is converted into electric power using a series of wind turbines. This is not at all the same as a Solar Chimney. There is no chimney and no large greenhouse-like glass roof. The Wind From The Sun power plant idea is not patented and is freely available for use by anyone. I have placed this technology in the public domain, so that anyone interested in developing the idea can work on it. Any interested scientists or engineers can perform experiments or set up a small scale test plant. Any interested person or company can develop a commercial version of the technology. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail
  • The Collector : A large area of land is covered with a material with low reflectivity (dark in color). This material converts the sun's light into heat.
  • Heating the air : The collector increases in temperature in the sunlight, causing the air above the collector to also increase in temperature. The heated air increases in volume and decreases in pressure.
