African Wind Power 3.6m diameter wind turbine
Here is some further information about the 3.6. See also the Temaruru page. The wind turbine is available in battery charging format for 12, 24, 48 or other voltages as required. A high voltage version with transformers is being tested. Pumping versions are planned.
"Nothing tells you more about a wind turbine's potential than rotor diameter."
Paul Gipe
Wind Energy basics, Chelsea Green 1999
Power curve
Here is the nominal power curve for the 3.6 machine. Power curves vary between different voltages, and there have not been sufficient funds to produce a complete set of data, but we are working on it. Notice that the diameter of the machine is large compared to it's maximum power output, and this gives it the torque to deliver good power in lower windspeeds, when other machines are unable to catch as much wind. We believe it is more important to have a steady, day to day supply of amphours into the battery, than to have a high peak-power rating.
This is a 'heavy metal' wind turbine, built for low speed and long life. In this picture you can see the alternator (black) and the 3 blades (white). The tail had not yet been attached to this unit. Assembly usually takes place at ground level, and then the tower is erected using a simple hand hoist (Tirfor). The tower is supported by steel wire guy ropes.

    Replacing fossil fuels:
    the scale of the problem
a briefing document site map Web abelard.org is the first in a series of briefing documents on the problems of power consumption, posed by the steady depletion of fossil fuels and most particularly of pumpable oil.
One of a grouping of documents on global concerns at abelard.org
Nuclear power - is nuclear power really really dangerous?

    Global warming

    Transportable fuels

    Distributed energy systems and micro-generation
    ... Table: Fuel usage efficiency
There are constant, ill-informed debates and reports that suggest that we can easily replace our fossil fuel usage by wind, or solar cell power, or some such method. Within current technology, this is a pipe-dream, it is impossible, it simply cannot be done. This does not mean that we are all dooooooooomed; but we are faced with a tremendous problem as reserves of fossil fuel, especially cheap pumpable oil, diminish. See World oil resources table for details.

home search contacts document.write(doClock("W0",",%20","M0","%20","D0",",%20","Y0")); Wind Power Wind Energy System Basics Unlike yesteryear's windmill, today's wind turbines use technological innovations that have substantially reduced the cost of electricity generated from wind power. In the 1920s and '30s, farm families throughout the Midwest used wind to generate enough electricity to power their lights and electric motors. The use of wind power declined with the government subsidized construction of utility lines and fossil fuel power plants. However, the energy crisis in the 1970s and a growing concern for the environment have generated an interest in alternative, environmentally friendly energy resources. Today, homeowners in rural and remote locations across the nation are again examining wind power to provide electricity for their domestic needs.
    Benefits of Wind Power
A wind energy system can provide a cushion against electric power price increases. Wind energy systems help reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels; and they are nonpolluting. If you live in a remote location, a small wind energy system could help you avoid the high costs of having utility power lines extended to your site.

A U.S. consensus-based collaborative formed in 1994, the National Wind Coordinating Committee (NWCC) identifies issues that affect the use of wind power, establishes dialogue among key stakeholders, and catalyzes appropriate activities to support the development of environmentally, economically, and politically sustainable commercial market s for wind power. NWCC members include representatives from electric utilities and support organizations, state legislatures, state utility commissions, consumer advocacy offices, wind equipment suppliers and developers, green power marketers, environmental organizations, agriculture and economic development organizations, and state and federal agencies. RESOLVE, a non-profit environmental dispute resolution organization, provides a full range of facilitation services to the NWCC. Wind Energy Information How Wind Power Works Wind turbines have blades designed like airplane wings. They rotate due to a pressure differential caused by air moving over the surface of the blade. The blades turn a rotor which drives an electrical generator. Turbines are designed to automatically face the wind either mechanically or by computer-controlled drive systems.
    Small Wind Systems
Small electric wind turbines for residential or small commercial use have been available for more than three decades. The current technology is highly reliable and converts wind energy into electricity efficiently.
    Wind Resource Assessment
To assure that the wind resource at your site will provide you with an appropriate return on you investment, you should collect wind speed and direction data. Interconnection Issues Distributed Wind (Small Wind Farms) Unlike large central-station generation, which is connected to the utility transmission system, distributed generation is typically smaller and connects to the grid at distribution-voltage levels. Permitting/Siting The goal of a wind facility permitting process, as with other energy facility siting processes, is to reach decisions that are timely and avoid unnecessary court challenge; ensure project compliance with existing laws and regulations ensuring environmental protection at a reasonable cost.

This brief tutorial explains how to estimate power and energy yields, of building-integral on-site solar and wind power conversion, storage, and management installations; analyzes past and new systems; and compares their cost. No suitable photos of existing building-integral installations, combining both solar and wind power, were found. Perhaps none exist, because conventional power storage devices needed for power on demand do not afford acceptable system options. For now, this illustration provides the best available means to visualize this concept. Briefly stated, PV (photovoltaic) and thermal solar panels can cover much of a building's exterior surface; including walls, windows, roofing, and skylights. PV panels (shown as light blue surfaces) can be used instead of conventional building enclosure materials, for competitive total building and power equipment life-cycle cost. Proximity to other parts of the building's electric system is not critical. However, solar heating panels (shown as dark surfaces) need to be nearer to the other components of the building heating system. They can be interspersed with PV panels as shown here. Heating system insulation, pipes, and ducts can thus be minimal.
