The wind is used to produce some electricity in Hawaii, particularly on the Big Island. Most of the wind machines produce and sell electricity to local utilities. Show Table . Although the amount of electricity produced from wind in Hawaii has been slowly declining over the past several years, there are several incentives for wind energy development and several new wind power projects currently under development.

The center is the world's third-largest wind generation project. Located 170 miles southeast of Albuquerque and 20 miles northeast of Fort Sumner, the wind center is perfectly suited for eastern New Mexico's windy landscape. Power production does not require water, produce emissions or generate solid waste. The wind center consists of 136 turbines, each standing 210 feet high. The facility can produce up to 200 megawatts of power, or enough electricity to power 94,000 average-sized New Mexico homes.

Modest cost forecast for wind energy growth
The cost of adding 10,000 megawatts of wind-generated power to the national generating mix over 10 years would cost consumers living in the state of Texas just 75 cents per month
November 30, 1998
Web posted at: 1:00 PM EST By Environmental News Network staff Wind turbines could fill vast fields out in the windswept landscapes of the United States at only a modest cost to energy consumers, according to a study from the Renewable Energy Policy Project. In fact, the cost of adding 10,000 megawatts of wind-generated power to the national generating mix over 10 years would cost consumers living in the state of Texas just 75 cents per month, or just nine dollars a year, according to the study. Skeptics of wind and other renewable energy technologies say that the cost of implementing wind energy is too high to even contemplate The addition of 10,000 megawatts of wind-generated power to the national generating mix, say the study's authors, would be equal to 0.7 percent of the nation's 1996 electricity consumption. That capacity, when added to the 1,750 megawatts of already existing wind power in the United States, would bring the total up 11,750 megawatts.

Electric Power Wholesale Customers Facilities Renewable Energy ... Energy Deregulation A leader in Texas wind power Since 1995, LCRA has generated wind power at the Texas Wind Power Project in Culberson County, about 100 miles east of El Paso. Wind turbines are usually mounted on towers from 100 feet to 300 feet tall because wind speed increases with height. Turbines operate best in areas where wind speeds are 16 mph to 20 mph at a height of 50 meters. Wide open West Texas, where the winds whip across the plains, is an ideal location for wind projects, also called wind farms. Here is a look at the wind power projects in which LCRA participates:
  • Texas Wind Power Project
Begun in 1995, the Texas Wind Power Project in Culberson County provides 35 MW of wind power capacity to LCRA. LCRA sells 10 MW from the project to the City of Austin. FPL Energy operates the facility. Delaware Mountain Wind Farm
In 1999, the Delaware Mountain Wind Farm began operations near the Texas Wind Power Project. LCRA, with a commitment to buy 30 MW of capacity, now is the only purchaser from this facility. This wind farm was developed by National Wind Power and now is owned by FPL Energy. Indian Mesa Wind Farm
In 2001, LCRA more than doubled its wind power portfolio from Indian Mesa Wind Energy Center began operations in Pecos County. by committing to buying up to 51 MW of capacity from Indian Mesa. It was developed by National Wind Power and is now owned by FPL Energy.

Welcome to the Atlas
Environment Canada's Wind Energy Atlas web site aims at developing new meteorological tools to be used by Canada's wind energy industry. It offers the possibility to browse through the results of the numerical simulations that were run on the Canadian territory in order to determine its wind energy potential. Consultants and the general public will find here valuable data about this promosing renewable energy. This site features color maps representing the average wind velocity and power on the whole country, as well as corresponding geophysical characteristics, all available in an easy to use browsing interface that allows you to go quickly to the heart of the meteorological data. Also offered are an overview of the methodology used to generate the different simulation maps, and a download section where data files can be obtained in case you would like to run custom simulations. The Canadian Wind Energy Atlas is a contribution from the EOLE Project , a research project hosted by Environment Canada (RPN) and initiated in year 2000.

According to the International Energy Agency, as of the year 2001, renewable energy sources (water, solar, geothermal, combustible and waste renewables, and wind) comprised 13.8 percent of the world's primary energy supply and 19 percent of all electricity production. Of that 13.8 percent, wind power accounted for only .0026 percent. That doesn't seem like much, but wind power is one of the fastest-growing sources of energy in both the United States and abroad. While the use of renewable energy sources as a whole has annually by 2 percent since 1971, wind-power generation has increased at an average of 52.1 percent every year between 1971 and 2000. The American Wind Energy Association estimates that an additional 6,500 megawatts of wind-energy generating capacity were added worldwide in 2001, accounting for about $7 billion in electricity sales. The U.S. alone added 1,700 megawatts worth of generating equipment.

Welcome to the World Wind Energy Conference Website. At a time of continuing record growth for the wind industry, I invite you to the World Wind Energy Conference 2005 to be informed on the latest policies and industry development issues in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and the world. Rapid growth in the wind sector exists with 50 GW of wind power installations to be tapped in 2005, but what are the environmental, technological and scientific frontiers to be challenged? Water and renewable energy technologies are integrally linked and essential to delivering the World Summit on Sustainable Development implementation plan and Millennium Development Goals - what are the developments in wind and desalination, what are the opportunities in Australia and other island economies? What will the wind industry contribute to increase development opportunities and thus foster economic wealth in the developing countries by making energy available? As we will face emerging global credit markets for greenhouse gas emission offsets - how does this influence our industry? What will the wind industry contribute to Kyoto targets and Markets? It is an essential time for our industry. Water and energy supply will require in many parts of the world increasing renewable energy portfolios - we await the convergence of state, national and international policies to achieve standardisation and full market penetration of our renewable energy technologies.
