Wind Energy Economics
O ne of the main benefits of wind energy is economic gain, both for individuals and for communities. Individuals can save money on their energy bills, and even make money, by generating wind power. Communities can diversify their economies and enjoy greater reliance on local resources when their members invest in wind. Of course, a wind project will provide these advantages only if the economics have been thought through in advance. Like any investment, wind energy projects require some research and a basic understanding of the risks, costs, and benefits involved. Risks
Every financial investment carries with it a certain amount of risk. There are basically three ways of investing in wind energy, each of which entails a different level of risk. Leasing Your Land. The least risky way to harvest the wind is to let someone else put up the capital and operate the wind project. You receive payments for the use of your property, while another party constructs and maintains the project. That party owns the turbine; you simply retain the rights to the use of your land. Investing With Others.

MISSION GOALS PEOPLE ... CONTACT INFORMATION At a total installed wind energy generating capacity nearing 1700 megawatts, California has the largest developed wind industry of any state in the nation. In addition, wind generated electricity provides close to 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to California ratepayers every year. California's wind energy resources could provide up to four times the present wind generating capacity and help address electricity problems facing the state. Successfully developing additional wind resources so they represent a valuable, clean, reliable and affordable part of the state's electricity system requires coordination among wind energy developers, environmental groups, electricity suppliers and government representatives. The importance of wind energy has long been recognized by the California Energy Commission , which supports research and development in renewable energy including wind through its Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program . It has set the target of generating 10% of all the UK's electricity requirement from renewable energy sources by the year 2010. Already over 1020 modern wind turbines, with a combined rating of over 580 MW, have been erected in England, Wales, and Scotland with support from the Non Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) and the Scottish Renewables Order (SRO), which enables developers to sign contracts to supply electricity to the grid for 15 years. The installation of many more turbines is planned, as wind energy is one of the cheapest of the new renewables. It is competitive with new clean coal fired power stations and cheaper than nuclear power. The cost of wind energy varies according to many factors. On average for a new wind farm in a good location it will cost around 2.9 pence per unit, though electricity from smaller wind farms is more expensive.
