The Energy Story is a general introduction to energy. Chapters explore renewable energy, fossil fuels, electricity, circuits and many other things.
http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/story/chapter16.html
Chapter 16: Wind Energy
Wind can be used to do work. The kinetic energy of the wind can be changed into other forms of energy, either mechanical energy or electrical energy. When a boat lifts a sail, it is using wind energy to push it through the water. This is one form of work. Farmers have been using wind energy for many years to pump water from wells using windmills like the one on the right. In Holland, windmills have been used for centuries to pump water from low-lying areas. Wind is also used to turn large grinding stones to grind wheat or corn, just like a water wheel is turned by water power. Today, the wind is also used to make electricity. Blowing wind spins the blades on a wind turbine just like a large toy pinwheel. This device is called a wind turbine and not a windmill. A windmill grinds or mills grain, or is used to pump water. The blades of the turbine are attached to a hub that is mounted on a turning shaft. The shaft goes through a gear transmission box where the turning speed is increased. The transmission is attached to a high speed shaft which turns a generator that makes electricity. If the wind gets too high, the turbine has a brake that will keep the blades from turning too fast and being damaged.

Under the Long-term Inflow and Structural Test ( LIST) program we also study how rare atmospheric events can impact the long-term structural integrity of wind turbines and how advanced data handling techniques can be successfully applied to the difficult field environment of operating wind turbines. In the TA area, Sandia is working under the auspices of Wind Powering America (WPA) to develop wind power in New Mexico and on Native America lands in New Mexico and Arizona. Our work is a joint program with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) under the auspices of the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy . In all our approaches, we use formal and informal teaming arrangements to work closely with wind turbine manufacturers, wind farm developers and operators, and other DOE laboratories. A complete bibliography and many online abstracts and full reports are provided here.

Local Electric Cooperatives Agree to Merge. The members of McCook Electric Cooperative, Inc. (McCook) headquartered in Salem and Southeastern Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Southeastern) headquartered in Marion have agreed to a merger effective January 1, 2006. Over 78% of the ballots cast by McCook members and 86% of the ballots cast by Southeastern members were in favor of the merger. A majority vote in favor of the merger by each Cooperative was required for approval. Results of the balloting were finalized at separate membership meetings held in Centerville on June 8 and in Salem on June 9. McCook will merge into Southeastern. Southeastern Electric Board President Harley Bruns welcomes the members to the June 8, 2005 Annual Meeting Manager Brad Schardin addresses the crowd at the June 8, 2005 Annual Meeting in Centerville, SD Informational meetings and member mailings were used to communicate the results of a merger study conducted in 2004 to the member-consumers. The study estimated net savings of $1.3 million during the first ten years of operation as a merged organization. The governing boards of both Cooperatives will combine to form a 15-member transitional board which will be downsized to a 10-member board at the 2006 Annual Meeting. Brad Schardin has been serving as the General Manager of both McCook and Southeastern and will continue in that capacity for Southeastern following the merger. Manager Schardin indicates that “providing quality electric service at an affordable price is and always will be the number goal of Southeastern Electric Cooperative”.

F or human development to continue, we will ultimately need to find sources of renewable or virtually inexhaustible energy. It's difficult to imagine this, but even if we find several hundred or even thousand years of coal and natural gas supplies, what will humans do for the next 250,000 years or so after they are depleted? Even the most apparently "inexhaustible" sources like fusion involve the generation of large amounts of waste heat enough to place damaging stress on even a robust ecosystem like Earth's, at least for the organisms that depend upon stability of the system to survive.

Teachers and students can learn about renewable energy and wind power by building working models vertical axis wind turbines.
http://www.re-energy.ca/t_windenergy.shtml
Wind energy is really just another form of solar energy. Sunlight falling on oceans and continents causes air to warm and rise, which in turn generates surface winds. The wind has been used by humans for thousands of years, first to carry ships across oceans and, later, to pump water and grind grain. More recently, wind has been harnessed as a clean, safe source of electricity around the world. more

These plans are for the construction of a machine called a Savonius wind turbine. Wind turbines come in two general types, those whose main turning shaft is horizontal and points into the wind, and those with a vertical shaft that points up. The Savonius is an example of the vertical axis type. It consists of two simple scoops that catch the wind and cause the shaft to turn. more

Aermotor Windmill ... Bibliography Excellent offsite link from our links page Wind Power (from Denmark) very detailed source of information
Types of Windmills
Aeration Windmill This windmill will aerate a pond or pump water out of your pond or river to water your animals or garden. This windmill will pump out of a shallow (up to 15m) well.
Aermotor Windmill They have been manufactured since 1888 and are the old standard of windmills. They will pump out of a well but will not aerate a pond or pump water out of the pond or river. These styles of windmills will not produce electricity! Many people think you can buy a regular windmill to run your air conditioner, freezer, washer, dryer, etc. and you can not. This is all 240 volts A.C. Many have seen ads "sell electricity back to your utility company." Do you think your local electric company would let you run a line from a windmill, or even a generator, and send electricity to their line? Dream on... You can make a windmill produce 12 volt D.C. to charge a battery, but you can charge your batteries with solar cells today much cheaper than using a windmill. The big windmills you see in Ravenshoe , Queensland will produce electricity but they cost thousands and thousands of dollars.
