    President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points
    8 January, 1918:
    President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points
It will be our wish and purpose that the processes of peace, when they are begun, shall be absolutely open and that they shall involve and permit henceforth no secret understandings of any kind. The day of conquest and aggrandizement is gone by; so is also the day of secret covenants entered into in the interest of particular governments and likely at some unlooked-for moment to upset the peace of the world. It is this happy fact, now clear to the view of every public man whose thoughts do not still linger in an age that is dead and gone, which makes it possible for every nation whose purposes are consistent with justice and the peace of the world to avow nor or at any other time the objects it has in view. We entered this war because violations of right had occurred which touched us to the quick and made the life of our own people impossible unless they were corrected and the world secure once for all against their recurrence. What we demand in this war, therefore, is nothing peculiar to ourselves. It is that the world be made fit and safe to live in; and particularly that it be made safe for every peace-loving nation which, like our own, wishes to live its own life, determine its own institutions, be assured of justice and fair dealing by the other peoples of the world as against force and selfish aggression. All the peoples of the world are in effect partners in this interest, and for our own part we see very clearly that unless justice be done to others it will not be done to us. The programme of the world's peace, therefore, is our programme; and that programme, the only possible programme, as we see it, is this:

        Thomas Woodrow Wilson Born: Birthplace:
Staunton, Va. (Thomas) Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Va., on Dec. 28, 1856. A Princeton graduate, he turned from law practice to post-graduate work in political science at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1886. He taught at Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan, and Princeton, and in 1902 was made president of Princeton. After an unsuccessful attempt to democratize the social life of the university, he welcomed an invitation in 1910 to be the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New Jersey, and was elected. His success in fighting the machine and putting through a reform program attracted national attention. In 1912, at the Democratic convention in Baltimore, Wilson won the nomination on the 46th ballot and went on to defeat Roosevelt and Taft in the election. Wilson proceeded under the standard of the New Freedom to enact a program of domestic reform, including the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the establishment of the Federal Trade Commission, and other measures designed to restore competition in the face of the great monopolies. In foreign affairs, while privately sympathetic with the Allies, he strove to maintain neutrality in the European war and warned both sides against encroachments on American interests.

Often it is difficult to determine whether a man is significant because of his own deeds or because he happened to be in the right place at the right time. Woodrow Wilson certainly presided over the nation at a memorable time, but his actions were significant and his policies still influence the United States today. His life is more a thought of what could have been, then what came to pass. Still, despite the inconsistencies, errors, and hesitations, Wilson's style and principles were unique. This enables his legacy to shine beyond the shadow of tragedy. From Princeton to President Wilson's rise to power was extraordinary. Few have risen from relative obscurity to world prominence so quickly. In 1909 he was the president of a small, struggling university, in 1918 he was the world's one hope for lasting peace. In 1909 Wilson's progressive programs and innovations as president of Princeton University attracted the attention of the Democratic political machine. They helped elect him Governor of New Jersey, but learned to regret it. Instead of following orders Wilson ended up cleaning house and riding the state house of much deep-seeded corruption. Presidential aspirations cut his tenure as Governor short. His writing, oratory skills, and progressive accomplishments gave him enough visibility to attract Democrats looking for a national leader. A speaking tour designed to test the waters was a rousing success and Governor Wilson stepped into national politics.

    Wilson, Woodrow
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, president of the United States from 1913 until 1921, led the United States into World War I and tried, with very limited success, to create a new structure of international politics at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. An activist president in both domestic and foreign policy who involved the United States deeply in Mexico and the Caribbean, Wilson initially hoped to mediate among the warring European powers when World War I broke out. In May 1915, after the sinking of the Lusitania and the loss of hundreds of American lives, Wilson eventually declared that the United States would hold Germany to a "strict accountability" for further losses of life. Less than two years later, after Germany finally began unrestricted submarine warfare, this policy led Wilson to secure American entry into the war in April 1917. Wilson insisted on maintaining a separate American political and military role during the war, labeling the United States an "associated" rather than an "allied" power, insisting that American troops fight separately in France, and planning a navy at least equal to any in the world. He made little or no attempt to direct the course of the fighting in France, but in January 1918 he issued his Fourteen Points, a plan for an impartial and lasting peace including freedom of the seas, an impartial adjustment of colonial claims, and greater freedom for many nationalities of eastern Europe. In September 1918 he suddenly became the key Allied leader when the German government asked him for an armistice based upon the Fourteen Points. His insistence upon changes in Germany's government helped lead to the German revolution and the armistice that followed on November 11, 1918.

    Woodrow Wilson
US President - 1913-21 National Photo Company Collection (Library of Congress). Like Roosevelt before him, Woodrow Wilson regarded himself as the personal representative of the people. "No one but the President," he said, "seems to be expected ... to look out for the general interests of the country." He developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order. In 1917 he proclaimed American entrance into World War I a crusade to make the world "safe for democracy." Wilson had seen the frightfulness of war. He was born in Virginia in 1856, the son of a Presbyterian minister who during the Civil War was a pastor in Augusta, Georgia, and during Reconstruction a professor in the charred city of Columbia, South Carolina.

PROFILES OF THE PRESIDENTS 28th President WOODROW WILSON LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS When Wilson was an undergraduate at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton), he wrote out on visiting cards: "Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Senator from Virginia." It was another 25 years, however, before he ran for public office and began to realize his political ambitions. Wilson's first wife, Ellen, an accomplished artist, prepared crayon portraits of five of the men he most admired for her husband's study. Included were Daniel Webster, the American orator and lawyer; William Gladstone, the British statesman; Edmund Burke, British essayist and statesman; Walter Bagehot, British economist; and, of course, the Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson, Woodrow's father. Washington etiquette was of little importance to Wilson. According to tradition, a president always walked ahead of his companions, even if those companions happened to be ladies. But Wilson refused to enter rooms before his wife, saying "a man who is a gentleman before becoming president should remain one afterwards." In the White House, Wilson's daily breakfast was a glass of grapefruit juice and two raw eggs; his favorite lunch was chicken salad.

Woodrow Wilson, twenty-eighth U.S. president Addresses Native Americans "The Great White Father now calls you his brother, not his children." (Spring, 1913) On November 5, 1912, Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey was elected president of the United States in a landslide Democratic victory. Soon after his inauguration, President Wilson called for the series of progressive reforms that he had dubbed the "New Freedom" during his successful campaign. Among the legislation requested by Wilson was greater federal support of the Native Americans, a U.S. minority that had been severely marginalized since the end of the armed U.S.-Indian conflicts in the early 1890s. Later that year, the president spoke to a congress of Native Americans and praised them on their "progress to civilization." In the speech, Wilson acknowledged that there were "some dark figures in the history of the white man's dealings with the Indians," but assured the Indian leaders that on the whole the U.S. government's motives and policies had been "wise, just, and benevolent." • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) led the United States through World War I and gained lasting fame as a champion of world peace and democracy. Wilson was one of the most remarkable men in American history. Before reaching the height of popularity as a world statesman, he had achieved success in two other careers. First, as a scholar, teacher, and university president, he greatly influenced the course of education. Then, as a political leader, he brought successful legislative reforms to state and national government. Wilson would have won a place in history even if he had been active in only one of his three careers.
Wilson was first of all a scholar. Even his physical appearance was like the popular idea of a scholar. He was thin, of medium height, and wore glasses. His high forehead, firm mouth, and jutting jaw all gave signs of thoughtfulness and strength. He was also a strong leader as a teacher, university president, and statesman.
    His character
Wilson was a man of firm beliefs. When he made up his mind or felt his principles were at stake, he could be a difficult opponent. In his letters, he often said he was not able to establish close friendships. But in truth, he had a great capacity for warm friendship. His energy, magnetic personality, and high ideals won for him the loyalty of many friends and political supporters.
