Sunsets Photography by Jim Robertson The countless hours I've spent observing and photographing animals in their habitats have lead me to a profound appreciation of our fellow creatures and a respect for their intelligence and personhood. For 20 years I lived close to nature in a remote cabin in Washington's North Cascadesthe first 15 without electricity and only accessible in winter via cross country skis. I literally know what it's like to live out there and have always thought of the wild animals as my closest neighbors. After which he started work as a Ranger for the Forestry Commission in south Scotland, where he stayed for some ten years. He then transferred to the Nature Conservancy Council, now called, Scottish Natural Heritage, and was posted to the Isle of Rhum for 3 years. Afterwards he transferred to Aviemore in highland Scotland where is interest in Photography started. He joined the local photography club and took overall first prize. He was asked to transfer to the St Cyrus NNR. where he managed the visitor centre and reserve. It was at St Cyrus NNR. that he entered into the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year competition and won the category the world in our hands, has been second in others, and been highly commended in other categories. Animal Photography
Take Your Best Shot
But Only with a Camera!
of Allan/The Animal Photographers
If you're like most photography enthusiasts, you're fond of taking pictures of animals domestic, as well as wild whenever you get the chance. If you have a fondness for them like we do, having devoted more than 20 years to photographing animals almost exclusively, you'll limit your "shooting" to the camera. If you're lucky enough to share your home with a dog or cat, no doubt you've turned your camera in their direction while they scamper or sleep. Perhaps your photo success with your pet/companion has varied. Here are some useful tips that we can share based on our experience creating both formal (portrait) and candid (environmental) photographs of animals. What can I do to capture the texture of fur? Cross- or side-lighting helps bring out the texture of animal fur. To be even more specific, we prefer about a one-stop difference between our main light source (this could be the sun or a flash) which is lighting our subject from the side, and our fill light, which is positioned near the camera and aimed directly at the subject. You can achieve this 2:1 side-to-front, main-to-fill ration placing your lights at appropriate distances. How do I get a good exposure on my black cat or dog to avoid "black blob" syndrome?

in or near airports (especially of facilities, personnel, or procedures) of soldiers, police, or game wardens (unless you ask permission) of military, police, or park service vehicles or installations Don't follow the rules (except the one above). Photography is all about having a "good eye" for a shot . . . sometimes that means breaking all the rules. Practice. Practice. Practice. Wait. Wait. Wait. Take a LOT of shots. Many professionals take 99 shots for every one they keep. I average about twice that many! Ask your guide/driver if the vehicle can be moved if you want a different shot at your subject. Sometimes they know the best angle to see the subject -after all, this is their profession! Always respect the other photographers in your vehicle, trading places for good shots and avoiding getting in each other's way.
