Texas Wildlife Photography
View pictures of real Texas wildlife, along with tips on photographing them "On most weekends and holidays, Wildlife Photographer, Jeff Heinatz, pursues his passion. He goes to Davis Mountains State Park, Big Bend National Park, Balmorhea State Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park or one of dozens of ranches in the Davis Mountains and Glass Mountains. With his Minolta cameras, 500-millimeter lens and mess of animal calls, he goes into the wilderness, and almost always returns with photographic proof of his exotic adventures." The Desert Big Horn Sheep, pictured here, is just one example of his talent. "He's been literally face to face with animals some people probably don't realize exist just 200 miles from San Angelo. Like black bears." "Black bears are making a comeback here," he said. "Most try to avoid people, but I've had them walk up to me and sniff nose to nose. Other animals such as badgers, coyotes, desert mule deer, elk, fox, golden eagles, hawks, javelina, mountain lions, owls, porcupines, roadrunners and others are all native to the Big Bend area of Texas. I have been extremely fortunate in obtaining many once in a life time photographs," some of which are featured on the

My professional interests lie in the field of plant genetics. Besides, I am much interested in dragonfly (Odonata) and butterfly and moth (Lepidoptera) fauna of the Asian part of the former USSR, and the Palaearctic in general. I have a number of publications on this subject. I travel a lot overthere and make collections of most insect groups for Siberian Zoological Museum at the Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology, Novosibirsk, Russia. (Please note that I have no private collection but can arrange exchange of specimens through the Museum.) My expertise also covers the flora to some extent.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
It's fun to go outside with a camera and take pictures of your favorite animals doing what they do best. You don't have to have a fancy, expensive camera to take good pictures. And the more pictures you take, the better at it you will get. Here are some tips to keep in mind when photographing wildlife. Support the camera properly. If you have a tripod, use it as often as you can. If you are holding the camera, use both hands. If there is not much light, hold the camera against a tree or rock to steady it. This way your image won't come out blurry. Vary where you put your animal in the frame. Don't always place the animal in the center of the frame. One way to compose a picture is to image a big Tick Tack Toe board (#) extending across the viewfinder of your camera. Place the object of interest, such as the animal's eye, in one of the four corners where the lines meet. This way it will be a little off center. Focus on the eye of the animal. If the eye is in focus, your photograph will probably look good. If it is not in focus, the photograph will not seem quite right.

Sunset on the Serengeti Plains
Our Africa site has just been renovated. It now contains mostly new material, including more in-depth information about the animals. The Hawaii and Zoo sites will be updated as well. We will also be adding new photos over time. Our Company, M.E. and Me Photography , includes my wife of 27 years, Mary Ellen, and myself, John Fields. We are both avid photographers on land and in the sea. I am a docent for the Los Angeles Zoo and have studied wildlife behavior over the years. The Africa site consists of photos taken in the Virunga Mountains of Uganda where we were fortunate to visit the wonderful mountain gorillas there. They are one of the most endangered of the primates. The remaining photos were taken in Kenya and Tanzania including the Serengeti Plains. This is one of the last great remaining wildlife refuge areas in the world. In the near future in the New For Kids Section we already have a child's book on animals in the L.A. Zoo and will be adding a coloring book section this Memorial Day weekend. We hope they enjoy it. Our Links Section is not yet started. If you are interested in a link with this site, please let us know.

Wildlife Photography and Adventure Travel
by Diane C. Ross
My first real adventure trip was a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. I was completely hooked. I decided that I was going to take some sort of adventure trip as often as possible. Over the years my trips have gravitated towards wildlife photography. Wildlife photography and adventure travel are actually a good combination. It turns out that to photograph a lot of wildlife you need to travel to remote locations. My travels have taken me across both the Arctic circle and the Antarctic circle. As a child my family was not well off. We weren't poor but we didn't have a lot of extra money. As a result most of our family vacations were spent camping. Even when we drove to California we spent each night at a different campsite. We did not stay in hotels and we never flew anywhere. I still enjoy camping, although I do it in a trailer now instead of a tent. However, I don't mind roughing it. Which is a good thing because the accommodations you stay in to get close to wildlife are not always good and sometimes they are downright bad. I have always loved animals so it is not surprising that one of my hobbies has turned out to be wildlife photography. As I child I would feed anything I could coax close enough. Usually chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, and deer. Who am I kidding, I will still feed anything I can coax close enough. Unfortunately my dogs make sure I don't get much of a chance on my camping trips anymore.
