WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY: Ethics Lesson level - all
WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
Part One: Code of Ethics
By Deb Tappan , Contributing Editor
Whether you’re out hiking in the backcountry or sightseeing from your car, having a chance encounter with wildlife is a magnificent and treasured moment. Watching little elk calves speed running zigzag among the herd or glimpsing a bear munching on glacier lilies are sights that captivate and inspire us all. For many however, the experience is so overpowering they lose sight of the fact that the subject of their admiration is a wild creature. Yes, sadly, I’ve seen some foolish human behavior over the years which resulted in tragic consequences to wildlife and humans. Therefore, it’s imperative that you know how to view and photograph wildlife sensitively and responsibly in a low impact manner. You will be rewarded with the most amazing experiences and others will learn from your fine example!
We natural history photographers adhere to a certain Code of Ethics. These guidelines are designed to ensure no harm is done to wildlife or their natural habitats. This is accomplished by following the points given below and by inquiring into and abiding by the rules and regulations of the area (national park, wilderness area, etc.) you are visiting. Be aware that the ecosystem you visit may be fragile, so tread gently and practice “leave no trace” principles

Wildlife Photography - Direction of Light
Return to Nature Photography 101 Index Though bright, sunny conditions are usually the least desirable for wildlife photography, often times we find subjects in our viewfinders under this kind of light. Therefore it’s important to understand how the direction from which the subject is illuminated will effect on our results. The direction of light can be classified as follows;
  • Frontal Lighting - Light source (the sun) is directly behind the camera and the photographer’s shadow is pointing directly towards the subject.
  • Side Lighting - Light source is 90-degrees off-axis to the lens, from either the right or left.
  • Back or Rim Lighting - Light source is directly in front of the camera and the subject’s shadow is pointing directly toward the photographer.
The Set Up

Photo 3
In order to illustrate the effect of the direction of light on wildlife photography, we needed a cooperative yet highly detailed subject. For this purpose, we used a mounted Wood Duck. The mounted duck was placed on top of a 4-foot step ladder with a piece of neutral toned cardboard between the mount and the ladder. Care was taken to frame the subject in a consistent manner, as well as to keep the backgrounds as consistent as possible. The camera equipment used included a Canon 10D, a Canon EF 300/4L lens, and a Bogen 3221 tripod with a Kirk BH-1 ball head. All images were shot wide open at f/4 in evaluative metering mode with the 2-second timer and mirror lock-up engaged. Shutter speed was set so that the histogram showed little or no clipping of the highlights. The RAW files were imported into Photoshop CS where shadow/highlight adjustments were made and the images sharpened.

I watched him tear down the tree between us
As a wildlife photographer in India, being charged by a tiger sometime in your life is almost a certainty Next morning when we went back to the same spot and looked at the ditch I had relied on so much, I almost did a back flip and died. I think I was very lucky I'd come across an extremely hungry elephant more intent on his meal than on a man at his feet flashing light every now and then. I remember hoping he thought the flash was lightning but why would lightning flash from the ground!! I guess you do have to be a little nutty in the head to be a wildlife photographer.
Nutty but still keep your wits around you to work your way around problems and get yourself out of dangerous situations which could turn ugly very suddenly. I have been charged and chased by elephants on fourteen different occasions, thrice by tigers and once even had the pleasure of sitting on an elephant charging a tiger. If these things aren't for you, don't even think of getting into wildlife photography.
