April 2005 Dear Wildlifer: We invite you to The Wildlife Society’s 12 Annual Conference in Madison, Wisconsin this September. The conference will be held in the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace Convention Center on the shore of Lake Monona just blocks from the State Capitol, the University of Wisconsin campus, and downtown dining and night life. We encourage you to come learn, create networks, meet old friends and make new ones, and enjoy everything Madison and the upper Midwest has to offer. The early fall weather should be glorious and football and hunting will be in the air. The conference starts the day after the huge Wisconsin – Michigan football game and the theme of our opening reception will be a tailgate party. The technical program for Madison includes 8 workshops and more than 20 symposia. There also will be a wide range of contributed papers and posters. In recognition of Madison’s and the sand counties of southern Wisconsin’s significance as the birthplace of our profession, the conference theme is ‘Following Leopold’s Footsteps’. The plenary session on ‘Six Decades After A Sand County Almanac’ will feature Nina Leopold Bradley, Aldo Leopold’s daughter, Leopold’s biographer Curt Meine, and a tribute to all the Leopold Medal winners. Don’t miss it!

The population boom has changed forever the living conditions of our wildlife. We humans invaded the animals habitat and forced them to live among us. By planting only berry-producing shrubs and trees which bear fruit, my whole property has become a wildlife habitat. To aid in my war against insects, I encourage a large population of birds in my yard by supplying them with their basic needs. My property provides the four basic habitat elements wildlife need to thrive: water, food, cover and a place to raise their young. I plan my landscape with needs of wildlife in mind and use only berry- or seed-producing plants. I encourage you to do the same. 173. FREE-ROAMING DOGS POSE A THREAT TO WILDLIFE
An article on the increased incidence of dogs chasing and killing wildlife in Colorado.
http://www.dnr.state.co.us/cdnr_news/wildlife/199861512282.html
Release Date: FREE-ROAMING DOGS POSE A THREAT TO WILDLIFE
Glen Eyre, district wildlife manager for Archuleta County, said that people honestly believe that their dogs are under control and do not believe that their dog would chase the wildlife.
Rick Adams, district wildlife manager in Basalt, said that between Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Vail, his department receives reports of dogs chasing big game almost daily.
During the spring, fawns and elk calves are particularly vulnerable. Recently, Adams was called to the scene of a gruesome dog attack on a young fawn in a subdivision near Glenwood Springs.
Colorado considers deer and elk state property valued at $700 for an elk and $500 for a deer respectively. That means pet owners could be billed and charged for the civil offense for any mangled deer or elk injured or killed by dogs.
Glen Cook, technician for the Boulder districts of Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, said that 25 percent of the people who hike in Indian Peaks wilderness bring their dog. Of those people, only 65 percent comply with the leash laws.
Attached is a list of National Forest areas where leash and voice command laws are enforced in wilderness areas. Rocky Mountain Region Wilderness Areas

On the trail of the leatherbacks
Since the end of June 2005, WWF and its partners have been tracking an increasing number of leatherback marine turtles in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
We've seen some of these leatherbacks, which are the biggest of all marine turtles, swim to depths of almost a 1000m and cover distances of over 2000km.

http://www.ionacons.demon.co.uk/vpwg/
Victoria Park Wildlife Group Victoria Park Wildlife Group is a group of local residents who help to improve Victoria Park, Bristol for people and wildlife. We are an independent group approved by the City Council and funded by the Council and various businesses and trusts. We have been operating since 1989 and are seen as a good example of how local people can become involved in managing a park. We have regular meetings and work-days and welcome your involvement. How you can help... VPWG always welcomes extra help. We need practical help for the park projects and also background support in administration, design and fund-raising. Current Projects Tree Planting
Over 12 000 native trees and shrubs have been planted since 1989 in the form of hedgerows and copses. The trees are all doing very well and have really begun to change the appearance of the park.
The Wetland
This ambitious project has occupied a lot of our time. This area is a great attraction to children and pets, as well as wildlife. Repeated planting of trees and shrubs has helped the area become a leafy oasis in the middle of the park.
Butterfly garden
A different kind of flower-bed near the Bowling Green is specially designed to attract and feed insects.
