Cascadia Scorecard Wildlife indicator Preliminary research
Overview: To measure the health of Northwest wildlife and the ecosystems that support them, Northwest Environment Watch is introducing a wildlife index, the latest addition to the Cascadia Scorecard. The index tracks population counts of five key indicator species: gray wolves, mountain caribou, greater sage-grouse, orcas, and Chinook salmon. (See related Cascadia Scorecard News article. The index will be released in complete form in Cascadia Scorecard 2006, but as research is completed we will post articles, maps, and charts from the index on our website and weblog. (See below for links to research on specific species.) The Scorecard is measuring population counts because they are the most basic assessment of a species' prospects and may reveal how the larger ecosystems that sustain the species are functioning. The five species Southern resident orcas that inhabit the inland seas of Washington and British Columbia. For much of last century, these orcas were under siege. Now, although the orcas are still in jeopardy, conservation efforts have paid off. [

For much of the last century, the southern resident orcas that inhabited the inland seas of Washington and British Columbia were under siege. Now, although the orcas are still in jeopardy, conservation efforts have paid off, and whale-watchers have a chance to see one of some 90 resident orcas in the San Juan Islands. Wildlife FAQ Index
Deer Deer are eating the leaves and buds off my plantsfruit trees, hosta, azaleas, tulips, phlox, lilies, etc. They even trample seedlings and shred the bark of young trees with their antlers. What is the best way to deter them? Moles I have a huge problem with a critter that burrows under the sod, leaving soft spots all over. It does not mound, so there are no holes to treat. There are too many tunnels to attack. My plants and veggies are dying by the truck load because all the soil is dug up. Rabbits My yard is full of rabbits. How do I get them to move out or leave my flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs alone? Squirrels Squirrels are becoming a real nuisance in our neighborhood. They dig up bulbs, uproot potted plants, monopolize bird feeders, dig holes in the lawn and steal tomatoes and other fruit. Sometimes they shred the bark on tree branches and they even gnaw on the siding and get into the attic. How can we get rid of them? Voles We have voles (small mice-like animals). They have chewed the bark on our fruit trees and eaten about 50 percent of our lawn over the winter. They seem to just eat the roots of the grass so the grass in dead. In summer they damage berries and vegetables. Also in the summer months they dig a small holes in the grass and make nests for their babies. I have two neighbors with the same problem. What are these animals, and how can I get rid of them? Woodpeckers I have had downy woodpeckers pecking at my house siding two years now during two different seasons. I fill the holes with caulk and they make new ones. Sapsuckers and woodpeckers are also damaging some of our trees. What can I do to scare them off permanently.
