Many of the deaths were avoidable if people were wearing Personal Flotation Devices (Life Jackets). In the 1990s an average of 40 fatalities a year included boaters just riding, skiers, fishermen and women, duck hunters, deer hunters, canoeist, and sailors. Many people simply fall overboard or are involved in a collision that is avoidable if a PFD is worn and adherence to some basic rules of boating operation is followed. Help us save lives through proper boating skills, let this be the one day that is dedicated to learning more about your favorite pastime and the beginning of the pursuit of knowledge of boating etiquette and skills that are of interest to you and your family as boating safety is surely a life skill.

The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) , our national bird , is the only eagle unique to North America. The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with a white (leukos) head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless. Bald eagles are found over most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico. About half of the world's 70,000 bald eagles live in Alaska. Combined with British Columbia's population of about 20,000, the northwest coast of North America is by far their greatest stronghold for bald eagles. They flourish here in part because of the salmon. Dead or dying fish are an important food source for all bald eagles.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was proposing the bald eagle be declared fully recovered by July 2000, but the decision was delayed until they figure out how they will manage the species once it is taken off the list. Even if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removes the bald eagle from the "threatened" species list, it will still be protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act . The Bald Eagle Protection Act prohibits the take, transport, sale, barter, trade, import and export, and possession of eagles, making it illegal for anyone to collect eagles and eagle parts, nests, or eggs without a

The following web pages represent updated versions of the species accounts in the three-volume set "California's Wildlife" edited by Zeiner, D.C. et al 1988-1990. It also contains 29 more accounts than the original publication, bringing the total up to 675. The species notes were prepared under contract with the best available experts for various taxonomic groups. Authors and reviewers names appear on the individual accounts. Accounts were initially edited by Marshall White and, in later years, by California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) Program staff with the California Department of Fish and Game. The species notes were designed to support the computerized species-habitat relationships database models in the CWHR System. The system is continually being revised. Hubbard Orangutan Forest Phase Two
Swings into Action!
Two orangutans have moved into their new, 3,292 square foot exhibit in Hubbard Orangutan Forest. The environment is complete with a waterfall, pond, three man-made trees each weighing about 20,000 pounds and over 2,000 feet of man made vine to swing up to the top of the 40' 4" tall exhibit. Covered by two skylights totaling 1,587 square feet and decorated with colorful murals, this exhibit not only pleases the orangutans and langurs, but the visitor as well. The new section of Hubbard Orangutan Forest has 3,218 new square feet of space to watch these apes. Separating the visitors from the orangutans are several 3/4 thick glass windows weighing up to 1,700 pounds each including a 5' bubble that allows visitors to "pop" into the orangutan's environment. Swing over to Hubbard Orangutan Forest and watch as the orangutans climb to their new heights in their indoor exhibit.
