Beginning November 2004, this site will be updated to ensure that rehabilitation data remains current. To accomplish this, we desperately need members to volunteer as content editors for specific species pages. Any pages that are not updated will be archived and unavailable for access. We will also be upgrading the programming used to maintain the site as well as incorporate PHP scripting language. Content editors are also needed for pages currently under development (raptors, turtles, etc). Content editors should have a strong background of experience in their selected species. Projects ... 2004 Annual Report
Angelika Koehne spends a day with David Dean, a member of the Colorado Division of Wildlife Rescue and Transport Team, and his wife Barbara who help sick and injured animals. She tells of her adventures in "On the wild side" The mission of the DOW's Volunteer Program is to assist the Division of Wildlife in attaining its goal of protecting, enhancing, and managing wildlife and its habitat for the use, benefit and enjoyment of the people of Colorado and its visitors. The Program attempts to build a broad base of involvement in the Division of Wildlife by encouraging citizens to work as volunteers. The Volunteer Program is designed to help Division personnel accomplish their duties and to give volunteers an opportunity to participate in and learn about the management of wildlife in Colorado. We are fortunate that there are volunteers with the interest, ability and willingness to work with us on projects of all kinds! We also want you - the people who pay the bills and own the wildlife- to see what the Division of Wildlife does firsthand. We hope that in working with us you can learn about wildlife and wildlife management in ways you never could from book or video.

Birdwatching and Wildlife Viewing Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR Birdwatchers have long held Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira as two "must see" places. Over 320 bird species have been spotted in Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area and 250 in Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Birds feeding along the roadways are easily observed with the naked eye. However, a 10X binocular or a spotting scope is ideal, especially for locating nests. (For example, the Yellow-headed Blackbird builds its nest by pulling together two or three cattails.) Mid-March brings migrating ducks and cranes. Whooping Cranes migrate in flocks of two to seven and sometimes accompany the smaller gray sandhill crane. A Great Bend naturalist describes his first-time sighting: "When I thought about how few of these are in the whole world and I saw a flock of 20, I was seeing one seventh of the world's population and that was to me like seeing Haley's Comet!"

Table of Contents What is CITES, and why is it important? The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement to regulate trade in specific species of wild animals and plants, as well as their respective parts and derivatives. The need to eliminate trade in illegally obtained animals and plants has existed for many years, particularly in developing nations in Africa, South America, and the Far East. The nations hardest hit are those that are very undeveloped, have little revenue, and are located in tropical areas that abound with wild animals and plants. The only income of any importance to many of these nations is from controlled exploitation of their natural resources in such ways as tourism and legalized hunting. If the resource is illegally hunted or destroyed, a major income source is lost and the country is likely to become even more destitute. Poaching and the resulting movement of illegally obtained specimens are worldwide and involve a very considerable amount of money. This type of trade often involves extreme cruelty to animals and very considerable wastage. The illegal trade of wild animals has, in some areas, practically exterminated certain species.
