Wildflower Brochure
This new century will be remembered as a time of landscaping naturally. Through ecologically sensitive seed saving and quality seed production, there has never been a better opportunity to enjoy the magic of the wild in your home garden. Join us in the endless adventure of planting wildflowers. Feel free to experiment. Try woodland, meadow or mountain favorites. Select by color, height, time of blossoming. Unknown successes await you only if you get started. The wildflower brochure is organized into 3 sections:
  • The Basics
  • Planting Strategies
  • Planting Instructions The Basics This first section provides basic background information about wildflowers allowing gardeners to avoid major mistakes by choosing a strategy before beginning to plant.
    PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
There is one indispensable ingredient to the successful cultivation of a wildflower garden: personal experience. Do not be deceived. Often the carefree appearance of a well-designed wildflower garden can belie the hours involved in achieving a natural look. Devoted wildflower gardeners know well the soil that nourishes. They are familiar with local rainfall and temperature variances. They are always keen observers, noting the first seeds to germinate, watching for the identifying green foliage and delighting in the buds that follow.

    1. Wildflower Gardens: Nature and Nurture
    by C. Colston Burrell
Native wildflowers are among the loveliest parts of the natural landscape. They grace fields, woodlands, wetlands, beaches, and rocky mountain slopes. Sweeps of bluebells and trout lilies carpet the ground on a woodland floor. Joe-pye weed and swamp sunflower enliven a moist roadside. In the spring, even the deserts of the Southwest come alive with wildflowers, while in the fall, eastern meadows are awash with goldenrods and asters. The sprawling stems of winecups (Callirhoe involucrata) Many wildflowers are also well suited to the cultivated landscape, and there are lots of good reasons to use wildflowers in gardens. Gardeners love color, and we love to bring the beauty of nature into our yards. Growing wildflowers enables us to do both. Another important reason to use native plants is to preserve the character of our regions. The best way to keep the visual sense of place that makes Minneapolis different from Atlanta or Washington, D.C., is to use the local flora. As Wilhelm Miller wrote in his 1915 treatise The Prairie Spirit in Landscape Gardening

Welcome to the Old Field Habitat Garden's home page. For more detailed information about the Garden, a pictorial visit, plant sales from our nursery, or our consulting and design services, please click on highlighted words or the information buttons. The Garden is an on-going landscape restoration project, located approximately 65 kilometers south of Ottawa in eastern Ontario, Canada. Initiated in 1984 by Philip Fry with the help of his family, friends, and students, the Garden's purpose is to enrich the biodiversity of a fifteen-acre parcel of abandoned pasture. The transformation of this property into a garden has relied on the site's geo-physical and biological characteristics ( its climate, topography, soil types, drainage, and the natural processes of plant succession) as well as natural and social history. To date, by focussing on the re-introduction of regional flora as a key to ecological regeneration, five distinct micro-habitats have been created. OUR NURSERY Our wildflower nursery, originally set up to provide appropriate indigenous stock for our planting program, now offers over ninety species of native plants for sale at reasonable prices. The nursery is open by appointment from Earth Day until Thanksgiving. As we are frequently at special events on weekends and Wednesdays, please do contact us to make your appointment. For more information, please click on "plant sales" to the left. CONSULTING AND DESIGN With over twenty years of experience in habitat gardening, we now offer on-site consultation and design services to gardeners who would like to intstall environmentally friendly, water conscious, chemical free gardens. Modeled on woodland, prairie and meadow habitats, and ranging from small "pocket gardens" or extensive landscapes in either urban or rural settings, these gardens can be envisioned as the progressive integration of native species into established gardens, the development of new outdoor living spaces, lawn replacements, or creative solutions to "problem areas."

Wildflowers and the garden Native wild flowers can be included in many planting schemes as a way of promoting biodiversity and linking gardens to the wider countryside. Plants must not be removed from the wild but should be obtained as seeds, bulbs or growing plants from reputable suppliers. The RHS offers advice on establishing and managing wild flowers in gardens. It is important that authentic native stock of wild flowers is used, especially where large scale plantings are being undertaken. To view these documents you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. A summary of RHS policy
The Royal Horticultural Society welcomes the increasing interest in the use of native wild flowers in gardens and the business that has developed to supply this market. The RHS deplores the removal of plants from the countryside for use in gardens. Such collection is illegal without first obtaining the landowner's permission and even then should only be done in exceptional circumstances. Even the collection of seed is prohibited in the case of some rare or local species.

New seed mixes make it possible A dozen or so years ago, it was a romantic notion: wildflower seeds packaged in cans could create instant meadows. Gardeners across the country, sparked by visions of dazzling blooms and meadow grasses carpeting their backyards, bought into the dream. And cans of these promising seed mixes flew off nursery shelves. Then reality hit. Gardeners - especially in the West - didn't find their backyards large enough for meadows. And many of the mixes contained mostly grass seed; the grasses and weeds usually grew faster than the wildflowers. In most cases, the meadows weren't pretty sights.
