    by Kathy Burns-Millyard
Planting wild flowers in your garden, or simply scattering wild flower seeds around an area of your yard are both ways to take advantage of Mother Nature's treasured gifts. Wild flowers are carefree, colorful, and tend to attract bees, butterflies and birds. So planting wild flowers not only gives you an easy maintenance flower garden... it also promises to be a constant source of interesting activity throughout the year. The following wild flowers are blue to purple in color, and some say this is a favorite color of bees. VIRGINIA or COMMON DAY-FLOWER (Commelina Virginica) - Spiderwort family
The Day Flower has blue, one inch wide or smaller flowers which tend to be irregular. The flowers are grouped at the end of the stem, and are upheld by long leaf-like bracts. The leaves are lance-shaped and 3-5 inches long. The upper leaves form like a hood of sorts about the flower. These wild flowers prefer moist, shady ground and flower from June through September. The day flower tends to open in the morning and looking somewhat "alert". In the afternoon, or after the bees have visited and fertilized it, the petals roll up and quickly wilt into a wet, shapeless mass which will leave a sticky blue fluid on your fingers if you touch it.

Charge at the door: $8.00 general public, ($5.00 members of supporting horticultural organizations). Cullina is nursery manager and propagator at the New England Wild Flower Society's Garden in the Woods and the author of The New England Wild Flower Society Guide of Growing and Propagating Wildflowers of the US and Canada. He is familiar also with North Carolina gardening, having worked at Niche Gardens for several years. Biography: William Cullina holds degrees in plant science and psychology and has been working in plant propagation and nursery production for fifteen years. In 1995 he became nursery manager and propagator at the New England Wild Flower Society's Garden in the Woods, where he runs the NEWFS native plant nursery now the largest of its kind in New England. Cullina lectures on native plants and propagation to garden and professional groups and writes for popular and technical journals. His first book, The New England Wild Flower Society Guide to Growing and Propagating Wildflowers of the United States and Canada, was published by Houghton Mifflin in 2000. A follow up volume on native woody plants will be published in 2002.

(HOME) "O world as God has made it! All is beauty." ROBERT BROWNING. "Knowing a little of the vast world of plant beauty quite shut out of our gardens by the system in vogue, I was led to consider the ways in which it might be introduced; and among various ideas that then occurred to me was the name and scope of the 'wild garden.' I was led to think of the enormous number of beautiful hardy plants from other countries which might be naturalised, with a very slight amount of trouble in many situations in our gardens and woods a world of delightful plant beauty that we might in this way make happy around us, in places now weedy, or hall bare, or useless. . . . There has been some misunderstanding as to the term 'wild garden.' It is applied essentially to the placing of perfectly hardy exotic plants in places and under conditions where they will become established and take care of themselves." W. ROBINSON.

Bogs and wetland habitats are home to many of New England's most beautiful wild flowers, including the blue flag iris.
Host Michael Weishan joined Bill Cullina, nursery manager and chief propagator at the New England Wild Flower Society, for a wet yet enlightening tour of the Society's "Garden in the Woods." Most people's first inclination when they encounter a wet or boggy area in their yard is to drain it or dry it out. But we say, not so fast: these spaces actually offer the home gardener a great opportunity, just as they are, for a different kind of gardening. As in many other parts of the country, bogs are an important part of the New England landscape. The ones we see today are part of the post-glacial landscape formed when glacial kettle holes filled in with mosses and developed these communities.
Green moss is a prime ingredient of bogs. It can grow out over the surface of a pond, decomposing to peat moss and slowly converting the pond to a bog.
Bogs are nutrient-poor environments. In particular, a northern bog is a habitat with the added difficulty of acidic soil. So the low, dwarflike plants that tend to grow in bogs, like cranberry and pitcher plants, are very well adapted to scavenging what nutrients there are. The more fertile habitats known as wetlands, on the other hand, are characterized by larger plants, such as iris and cattail, that thrive in the water or around its edges.

A Wild Passion? A Wild Patience? A Wild Flower? Cultivating in the Feminist Theory and Music Garden Roberta Lamb Old Sweaters, Nets, Spray-mottled Books Integrity The Length of Daylight This Far North . . . ... References Old Sweaters, Nets, Spray-mottled Books . . . I have been asked to talk a bit about my path through feminist theory and music. I am honored and humbled. It has been a challenge choosing what to include and what to leave out. My choices reflect a partial and particular understanding. All papers involve performance. So, for this one, though it may not be to the extent that some of you have come to expect from me, I evoke an expatriate community by way of Alice B. and Gertrude by way of blue gown and flowered hat. I spend most of my spring and summer free time in my garden, so the image as cultivating a garden through several seasons rather than taking a journey makes more sense to me. In this context of cultivating, a process of enriching and reclaiming, I remember reading something by Adrienne Rich that contained the phrase 'a wild passion has taken me this far.' It is a phrase that stuck with me.
