Rationale or Purpose:
  • Students in second, third, and many in fourth grades need manipulatives and visual models to help them understand mathematical concepts. The number line is a valuable tool to help students see relationships between numbers.
  • The TAKS test requires that students have a good understanding of the number line.
  • After completing these activities, students should be able to:
    • use the number line to order numbers and tell which is larger or smaller
    • use the number line to complete simple addition and subtraction problems
    • invent addition and subtraction problems and demonstrate how to solve them using a number line
    Brief description of lesson plan:
    This coordinated set of three activities allows a teacher to introduce how a number line works, guide students in understanding how to place numbers correctly along a number line, and show students how to use the number line to carry out addition and subtraction problems.
    Materials:
    • The giant number line for Activity #1 can be created with paper or marked out with tape on the floor using the pattern for the giant number line
    • The individual dry erase boards in Activity #1 provide each student with their own work surface. Students can use plain paper if there are insufficient numbers of dry erase boards.

How we came by decimals and how place value works. A decimal is another way to write a fraction. In $4.25 , $0.25 is part of a dollar. It is 25/100 of a dollar. In a decimal, the farther right the number the smaller it's value. Always remember all decimals can be written as fractions. Our number system is a base 10 system. I can hear you saying, "Why do I need to know this?" Well, in a base 10 number system you can always change the place value of the number by one spot by either multiplying or dividing by 10. The place values vary by a factor of 10 meaning you either multiply or divide by 10 to change the numbers place value. Examples:
One-tenth moves one place to the right to the ones place because you multiplied by 10.
1/10 x 10 = 1
0.1 x 10 = 1 Ten moves one place to the right to the tens place because you multiplied by 10.
10 x 10 = 100 One-tenth moves one place to the left because you divided by 10.
1/10 divided by 10 = 1/10 x 1/10 = 1/100
.1 divided by 10 = .1 x .1 = .01

Algebra Unit Plan 8 lessons: 45 minutes each
In this unit plan, students use buttons to explore the relationships among numbers from zero to 10 and the operations of addition and subtraction. This unit fosters communication, representation, and reasoning.
Mathematical Students' ability to classify and seriate objects forms the basis for their understanding of number. In this unit, students use buttons to explore these logical processes. Then they apply these developing skills to the operations of addition and all three meanings of subtraction (take away, comparative, and missing addend). A set model is used for both operations. Using the Plan: This unit is most appropriate at grades 1 or 2 or for students who are functioning at those instructional levels. It may be presented in its entirety as a planned sequence of activities or individual lessons might be used to introduce specific topics. The use of the same concrete model throughout the unit plan fosters the development of a solid schema for addition and subtraction. Tortillas – Cut into halves and fourths. Place the cut tortillas at tables or desks in the room so that four students will be able to gather around the fourths and two students around the halves. *caution* Some flour tortilla makers may use peanut oil, please check with the nurse to see if any of your students are allergic to peanuts.
