"Mixed feelings emerge as we reflect on the five and a half incredible years since we threw the lines off the dock in San Diego, California and set sail across the Pacific Ocean. As the experience of a lifetime, a life among whales, draws to an end, it is with great pride, but also sadness that our final journey concludes on August 17th in Boston Massachusetts."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) Two dead beluga whales washed ashore Friday after dozens of the animals were temporarily stranded on mud flats during extreme low tides. The dead whales apparently were among 46 beluga that were grounded for several hours Thursday along the shore of Turnagain Arm, about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage. The survivors swam out with the high tide Thursday night, said Barbara Mahoney, a biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service. The two dead beluga washed ashore north of the stranding site. Alaska Native hunters salvaged blubber under an agreement with fisheries officials. Necropsies were planned on the whales' internal organs and other parts.

Dwarf minke whales were first recognised as a distinct form in the mid 1980s and there is still little known about them. They attracted attention in northern Great Barrier Reef waters because they regularly approached close to boats and swimmers. While many countries have banned programs where visitors can swim with whales, a swim with whales industry has developed in waters of the northern Great Barrier Reef based on the voluntary approaches of dwarf minke whales.
To ensure the encounters have a minimal impact on the whales, research is being focused on learning more about the dwarf minke whales and their interactions with swimmers.

The porpoise is smaller than both whales and dolphins. whales, dolphins, and porpoises are all mammals that breathe air and are members of the whale family.

The Topic:
Looking for information and pictures on a specific species or type of whale or dolphin? Be sure to visit the companion webpage to this project that is titled Species of Whales and Dolphins . There you will find so many more websites that it was necessary to break them off onto their separate webpage. Easier - Whales are group of large sea animals that look like fish, but are not. They are really mammals. Another sea animal group related to whales but smaller in size are dolphins. Dolphins have a snout shaped like a beak. Dolphins should not be confused with the brightly colored ocean fish of the same name. A third related ocean animal is the porpoise with a rounded head and a short, blunt snout. The porpoise is smaller than both whales and dolphins. Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are all mammals that breathe air and are members of the whale family. Harder - Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are all members of the scientific order cetacea (Pronounced: suh-TAY-sha). As cetaceans, they are warm blooded, bear their young alive. and the babies nurse their mother's milk. Cetaceans live entirely in water but must breathe air through their lungs. They have fishlike bodies with a thick layer of fat or blubber to keep them warm. Cetaceans also have flippers for front limbs, but do not have hind limbs. Unlike most other mammals, they have very little body hair.

Whale
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Whales are the largest species of exclusively aquatic placental mammals , members of the order Cetacea , which also includes dolphins and porpoises . They are the largest mammals, the largest vertebrates, and the largest animals in the world. The term whale is ambiguous: it can refer to all cetaceans, to just the larger ones, or only to members of particular families within the order Cetacea. The latter definition is the one followed here. Whales are those cetaceans which are neither dolphins (i.e. members of the families Delphinidae or Platanistoidea ), nor porpoises . This can lead to some confusion because Orcas ("Killer Whales") and Pilot Whales have "whale" in their name, but they are dolphins for the purpose of classification. Cetologists tend not to worry too much about such distinctions.

Taxonomy
Cetaceans are divided into two suborders:
  • The baleen whales are characterized by the baleen , a sieve-like structure in the upper jaw made of keratin , which they use to filter plankton from the water. They are the largest whales.

CETACEANS-WHALES, DOLPHINS, AND PORPOISES
Marine mammals in the cetacean family include whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Although whales spend all their time in the oceans, they are mammals just like us. This means that they are warm blooded, give birth to live young, nurse their young, have traces of hair or fur, and must come to the surface to breathe air through their lungs. Toothed whales tend to be social and live in groups. Like bats, they use echolocation or sonar to detect objects in their environment. They produce sounds in the air passages in their heads, which are then projected out in front of them. The sounds bounce off solid objects and return to them (like an echo), so the animals are able to get a "picture" of what is around them. A lot of research is being done on whale sounds. Many species, such as the sperm whale, seem to have individually identifiable calls. Orcas (killer whales) live in groups or pods and each pod has a dialect or accent, just like we have accents depending upon which part of the world we are from.
