In 1957 the sultan became King Muhammad V. He was succeeded in 1961 by his son, Hassan II, whose early reign, plagued by internal unrest, coups, and assassination attempts, was repressive. Hassan's position was strengthened in 1976, when Spain relinquished the Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara) to joint Moroccan-Mauritanian control. Challenged by the Polisario Front, a guerrilla movement backed by Algeria and seeking independence for the area, Mauritania withdrew in 1979, but Morocco continued battling there and claimed the entire territory. King Hassan died in 1999 and was succeeded by his son Muhammad VI. Initially extremely popular, the new king revealed himself to be a strong advocate of social change and economic improvement. In July, 2002, Morocco occupied an uninhabited islet off Ceuta that is claimed by Spain, drawing international attention to the disputed Spanish enclaves along Morocco’s Mediterranean coast. After Spanish forces removed the Moroccans, both sides agreed to leave the islet unoccupied.

SADR PROCLAMATION OF THE SAHARAWI ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC
(February 27, 1976)
In the name of the Saharawi people, and in pursuance of their will, the flag of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic has been raised over the land of Saguiat el-Hamra and Rio de Oro. The birth of an African State with deep roots in the history of our people, with a civilization which spread over the entire Maghreb was so proclaimed. The strength of this state arises out of the faith of its sons in their right to life and freedom, and its principal arm is their determination and perseverance in the struggle. A new page has been started on which is written the struggle of our people who are today defying the colonialism of the neighbour "brothers", for by their heroic struggle they brought the previous page of the foreign enemy's colonialism to an end. Today the Saharawi people have decided to publicly take an important step: to set up the fundamental institutions arising out of revolutionary legality, essential to succeed in the present struggle for liberty and to exercise truly democratic power. In carrying out the will of our people the POLISARIO Front, with the unanimous agreement of the Provisional National Saharawi Council, decided to constitute a government which will assume responsibilities for the continuation of the battle, raising the flag of the liberation struggle always higher until final victory, which will guarantee peace and security for our people and open before them and brother Arabs and Africans the way to unity and liberation.

Oct 01 News Differences over Western Sahara may be behind Morocco's decision to recall ambassador and put bilateral summit with Spain on hold
MADRID, Spain The Western Sahara conflict appears to be at the center of a new rift between Spain and Morocco, which this week recalled its ambassador and suspended a summit meeting. The Spanish foreign ministry confirmed Morocco's actions Wednesday, but a spokesman said the North African neighbor had "not given any explanation why." The Spanish news media has been speculating all week what was behind the tailspin in diplomatic relations between the two countries. Until Wednesday, the Spanish government had said it had been caught by surprise. But Foreign Minister Josep Pique told Spanish National Radio Wednesday that his counterpart, Mohamed Benaissa, had last week complained about views expressed by the Spanish government and news media on the disputed Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony on Morocco's border [...] More Source: AP WorldStream via COMTEX, 31 Oct 01

Pray for Saharawi (Western Sahara) - A Nation Lost in the Desert
At the western end of the Sahara desert, in a land that receives 4.5 cm of rain a year and where temperatures vary from 60 degrees C in the shade to near freezing at night, lies a country called Western Sahara.
Life Expectancy
In this harsh, sun-soaked, sand-moving country lives a people called the Saharawi. Of semi nomadic decent they are a Berber/Arab mix. Their Arabic inheritance can be traced back to the 15th Century when tribes migrated from Yemen across North Africa and settled in Western Sahara. Later, the acceptance of Islam by the Berbers and the increasing strength of the Arabic culture gave the tribes people a predominantly Arabic bias. As a result of this mixture of tribes the Saharawi people and culture was born. There are many shades of Saharawis, the majority are pale-skinned. In the camp schools some children have near- blue eyes and pale or reddish hair, but there are also Saharawi whose skin is the jet black of central Africa. Culturally, the darker skinned people have less status over lighter skinned. The people are warm, extremely hospitable and open to outsiders and other religions (at least for dialogue). The younger generation are increasingly rejecting Islam. Of the 230,000 people that call themselves Saharawi, only approx 30,000 still live there. The rest have fled to Algeria due to war, famine and oppression. They live in refugee camps of faded canvas tents or mud brick huts that become like ovens in summer and which dissolve into mud in the rare years of rain. These camps have, however, been called the most organised and well-run refugee camps in the world. They’ve had over 20 years of practice. Life expectancy averages 45 years for men, women 47.
