Factors Influencing College Aspirations of Rural West Virginia High School Students

Journal of Research in Rural Education, 19 (2). Retrieved [date] from http://www.umaine.edu/jrre/19-2.htm Abstract Direct Sources of Influence on Academic Development Indirect Sources on Influence on Academic Development Regional isolation sometimes prevents accessibility of information and assistance. The AAS study, conducted in rural Appalachian Ohio, reported on institutional factors acting as barriers to the attainment of higher education. These factors impacted students through their school personnel and were primarily related to the lack of information available to high school counselors, and, as a result, lack of college information available to students. High school personnel found it difficult to obtain and maintain access to admission requirements and financial aid information for various colleges. Of particular interest is the effect of poverty on all levels of the ecological system. Socioeconomic status and availability of resources greatly impact the decision-making processes of students (Freeman, 1999; Spohn et al., 1992). Bronfenbrenner (1986) documented the many areas of research that discuss the impact of economics on child development. Finances affect children in the home, in their interactions with family members, at school, and in their neighborhood play area. Elder, Nguyen, and Caspi (1985) explained:

History of WJPB-TV/WDTV, Weston
The pictures show the TV tower on Fisher Mountain. Bobby Bolyard is believed to be the person in the right photo. Some of the information for this page was taken from an article written by the station in the 1980s. Assistance with this page was provided by Jim Hines, the IT Manager of WDTV. This page was last revised on Oct. 3, 2004. I do not have the sign-on date for WJPB-TV. The 1956 West Virginia Blue Book shows WJPB-TV, Fairmont, operating on channel 35 with 25,000 watts. The station was operated by Beacom Broadcasting Enterprises, J. Patrick Beacom, President. Other principal owners were Thomas P. Johnson, former major stockholder of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and George W. Eby, also of Pittsburgh. The station was affiliated with NBC and ABC. The address was Radio-TV Centre, 400 Quincy Street, Fairmont. Apparently the station switched to Channel 5 in 1960. Various sources say the station began operating on either June 1 or June 22, 1960; these dates apparently refer to operation on Channel 5 from Weston. The 1961-62 Broadcasting Yearbook shows WJPB-TV operating on channel 5 with 100 kW visual power, 60 kw aural power, and an antenna height of 884 ft above average terrain and 509 feet above ground. The address is 400 Quincy St. The phone numbers are 363-0700 (Fairmont) and 2098 (Weston). The licensee is WJPB-TV (original owner). Ownership is J. Patrick Beacom, 50%; Thomas P. Johnson, 45%; George W. Eby, 5%. Network: ABC-TV. Personnel are J. Patrick Beacom, president and general manager; Eugene Adam, station manager; Eugene LaRosa, commercial manager; N. C. Pellegrin, program director; Raymond Hearst, program manager; Byron Parrish, news director; Edward Yerky, chief engineer.

West Virginia AG Ends Involvement with ‘Civil Rights Team Project’ McCoy’s Persistence Made Pro-Homosexual School Program a Liability The following is excerpted from a letter sent by Frances Hughes, chief deputy to Darrell McGraw, Jr., the Attorney General of West Virginia, to Kevin McCoy, director of the American Family Association (AFA) of West Virginia. The state School Board will vote February 20 to decide the fate of the controversial pro-“gay” “Civil Rights Team Project”: January 16, 2003 Dear Mr. McCoy: Thank you for taking the time to meet with the Attorney General’s office this morning [the AG’s meeting with McCoy and other AFA officials actually occurred on January 15, McCoy said]. We believe that the meeting was very productive and informative. …. We speak your language. Dice.com the leader in Tech jobs. On the eve of an appeals court appearance, the state of West Virginia unexpectedly dropped its bid to seek stronger penalties in the Microsoft antitrust case, privately settling with the company and leaving Massachusetts as the final holdout. Representatives from West Virginia and Massachusetts were to have met with Microsoft and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday, when they would have presented written arguments to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Now, only Massachusetts will stand against Microsoft in the hearings, scheduled for November 4.
"Massachusetts remains committed to this appeal and will see it through," a spokesperson for Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly said late yesterday. West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGaw agreed to drop his state's appeal of the wider Microsoft case as part of a separate settlement with the company in which the state will also drop other suits filed against Microsoft under state law. Brad Smith, a Microsoft general counsel, says the settlement is comparable to the agreements the company reached with California and Florida. In the West Virginia settlement, Microsoft will provide $18 million worth of vouchers toward hardware and software purchases; as much as half of that amount will go to the state's poorest schools, Smith noted. Microsoft will give the state an additional $1.7 million, $1 million of which is headed for West Virginia schools.
