When Jared Fogle was in elementary school, he often rode his bike to "fast food alley," a row of chain restaurants in his Indianapolis neighborhood. There he snuck extra meals–and began years of unhealthy eating habits. By the time he was 20, Fogle weighed 425 pounds. He unsuccessfully tried several diets until he found the solution next door to his apartment building. A steady diet of low-fat, low-calorie Subway sandwiches coupled with daily walking helped Fogle lose 245 pounds in one year. Fogle, now a spokesman for Subway, shared his colorful personal story at "The Harvard Forums on Health: Focus on Obesity," the first in a new series on critical health care issues sponsored by the Harvard University Interfaculty Program on Health Systems Improvement (PHSI). The series launched at HSPH on June 11. Kennedy School of Government professor David Gergen moderated the event, which attracted a capacity crowd to Snyder Auditorium. "This is not a happy time in the world of health care in the United States," observed David Blumenthal, director of PHSI. The Program organized the Forums with

An Update on the Ornish Program
Studies provide evidence that it reverses heart disease, but are insurance companies and hospitals coming on board?
By Ben A. Shaberman
C onventional wisdom says that a good diet, Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, American Journal of Cardiology,
The first 12 weeks of the Ornish Program are intense. Patients visit their program site twice a week for four hours. During these sessions, participants learn about each facet of a new lifestyle. They are monitored and counseled by a team, which includes a physician, a nurse, a certified stress management specialist, a licensed behavioral health clinician, an exercise physiologist, and a registered dietitian. After the first 12-week stage, patients continue on-site visits for three to nine months, depending on the improvement in their risk factors and compliance with the program. All participants are monitored for a year, regardless of how long they continue their on-site work. Janco points out that approximately 90 percent of participants complete the yearlong process.
