West Virginia in Action
The West Virginia Physical Activity/Nutrition/Tobacco Steering Committee is working to develop a comprehensive plan for obesity prevention. The development process includes working through the Regional Health Promotion Specialist Network to get local- and state-level input. On the basis of information on existing obesity prevention efforts, the committee has determined that while the plan will address the state population as a whole, for maximum impact it should focus on youth through the Action for Healthy Kids Team. The majority of existing statewide physical activity and nutrition efforts focus on change at the personal level. When completed, the state physical activity and nutrition plan will have a strong focus on policy and environmental change to support these individual behavior change programs. Recently:

Public Health Problem
Evidence That Prevention Works

Health education in schools can reduce the prevalence of health risk behaviors among young people. For example, health education resulted in a 37% reduction in the onset of smoking among 7th graders. In addition, obese girls in the 6th and 8th grades lost weight through a program at school, and students who attended a school-based life-skills training program were less likely than other students to smoke or use alcohol or marijuana. Program Example
Implications

CSHPs provide a focal point for collaboration and are a good use of resources to improve the health of youth and the adults they will become. These results show how a coordinated school health program improves learning, performance, and health for students and teachers. Contact Information Florida Department of Education

Childhood Obesity – An Overview of Policy Options In
    Legislation for 2003-2004
2005 Update Now Available Obesity is epidemic in the United States. In the past two decades, rates of overweight and obesity have doubled for children and tripled in adolescents. The percentage of overweight among children and youth has climbed to the 15 percent range. Being overweight or obese increases risk for the top U.S. causes of death and disability including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Across the country, obesity carried a $117 billion price tag in 2000, accounting for 9 percent of the nation’s total health care costs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that if current obesity trends continue, one-third of all children, and one-half of African-American and Hispanic children, born in 2000 will develop diabetes. Fortunately, much can be done to prevent costly obesity-related health problems. State legislators have begun to aim prevention efforts at obesity risk factors that begin in childhood—such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and the increase in children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA promotes within the legislative and executive branches of government a better understanding of the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity control to the nation's health and health-care costs. One of the primary goals of NANA is to cultivate champions for nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention in Congress and federal agencies. Efforts include supporting effective education programs, advocating adequate funding for programs, and promoting environmental changes that help Americans eat better and be more active. NANA is made up of more than 300 organizations. NANA's policy priorities include:
