84. History Of WKNA-TV, Channel 49, Charleston, West Virginia

History of WKNA-TV, Charleston
Recollections by Ted McKay
In February of 1953, Gus Zaharis, the owner of WTIP, withdrew his application for a TV station on UHF channel 49 and cleared the way for the granting of a construction permit to WKNA as Charleston's first commercial TV station. When the construction permit was issued less than a month later, the first decision to be made concerned the location of the transmitter site. Al Ginkle, who was chief engineer of WJLS, Smith's Beckley station, was placed in charge of site selection, and set up residence in the old Ruffner Hotel on Kanawha Boulevard, about a block east of the WKNA studios. Ted McKay remembers how he and Ginkle rented a Jeep and traveled up and down unpaved logging and mining roads surveying possible sites around Charleston. Final selection for the offices, studio and transmitter was a spot atop Bownemont Hill, overlooking Charleston's west side near the Patrick street bridge. Smith named several key people at WKNA Radio to the TV staff, including George Gray as manager, Don Hays as program director, and Ted McKay as film and promotion director. Ed Miller and Dick Reid along with McKay were to serve as on-air talent. It's hard to believe that the FCC would duplicate a blunder it had made in the 1940's when it changed the frequencies allotted to commercial FM stations after the sets were being built and broadcast stations were in service. The public became so confused about what FM really was that AM radio remained dominant well into the 1960's.

THE ONLINE VOICE OF THE NATION'S LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY
Forget Marijuana. Meth Is The Nation’s Biggest Drug Problem According to the federal government, the use of marijuana is the biggest drug problem in the U.S. But ask anyone in law enforcement or public health what the number one drug problem we face as a society is and they’ll tell you the answer is obvious. It’s methamphetamine. A decade after meth took hold in the heartland, the inexpensive, highly addictive stimulant is exhausting law enforcement resources to the point where there’s little time for anything else.
Deputy, Critical Of Sheriff, Told To Ride The Bus
A deputy in Wisconsin who blasted Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. in a union newsletter has been given a curious new assignment. The deputy was reassigned to a one-man foot patrol. In addition to walking his new beat, Deputy Michael Schuh, 55, was told he had to take a bus to and from the north side area of Milwaukee – an area that has seen high rates of violent crime and a spike in homicides. Greetings From The Mississippi Gulf Coast. My name is Lt. Joe Pevey and I'm with the Harrison County Sheriff's Department in Gulfport Mississippi. We were ground zero with Hurricane Katrina. We see the majority of the national media attention is focused on New Orleans (40 miles to our west). But once the water is pumped out of New Orleans, the city is still there. Our situation is much different. Our storm surge was anywhere from 20 feet to 41 feet depending on what part of the county you were living. All homes for a 23 mile stretch of the MS gulf coast were totally destroyed for 1/2 mile inland from the beach. This area (prior to the storm) was heavy populated. The devastation is total.

While most students were catching up with friends, seniors Sarah Nagem and Grant Smith were hard at work at The Daily Athenaeum (DA) newsroom the night before classes started. For the two editors of West Virginia University’s student newspaper, they would not have it any other way. Nagem, from Wheeling, was recently named editor of The DA ; Smith, from Charleston, managing editor. Both are journalism majors. A transfer student from Point State College in Pittsburgh, Nagem recently completed her second summer internship with the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram . This is her third year at The DA. She first joined the paper as a news writer her freshman year, then advanced to city editor her sophomore year and was promoted to editor last semester. "I think I’d want people to know the paper functions just like any other newspaper," Nagem said. "We put in a lot of hours and it’s hard work. I help wherever needed, but it’s the writers and editors who make it work. I’m just there to make it all run smoothly."
