The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is responsible for developing, establishing, and overseeing the implementation of a public policy agenda for the state's four-year colleges and universities. It is charged with oversight of higher education institutions to ensure they are accomplishing their missions and implementing the provisions set by state statute. The Commission consists of ten members; seven of whom are appointed by the governor, and three ex-officio members; the secretary of education and the arts, the state superintendent of schools, and the chairperson of the WV Council for Community and Technical College Education.
Next Commission Meeting The next meeting of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, which was previously announced for October 7, has been postponed. More details about meeting and agenda materials may be downloaded here Series 8, Personnel Administration Series 8 governs personnel issues for classified employees with some references to faculty and non-classified employees. Senate Bill No. 448 requires the Council for Community and Technical College Education and Higher Education Policy Commission to develop a joint legislative personnel rule. As a result, the rule must be approved by the Legislative Oversight Commission on Education Accountability (LOCEA) and ultimately the West Virginia Legislature. What are colleges, businesses, community groups and government doing to prepare the next generation of internationally competent citizens? Democrats Move the State Forward with Special Session Accomplishments Our Democratic Governor and Democratic Legislature moved the state forward by passing several key pieces of legislation in the most recent special session. Some of the key bills:
    • Lowered the food tax by 1% - a responsible cut saving residents about $25 million a year. Gov. Manchin has set a goal to gradually eliminate the food tax during his tenure as governor. Regulated the so-called 527 organizations to make them play by the same campaign finance rules as all other political organizations to ensure cleaner and fairer elections. Provided more tools to local governments to serve their citizens. Regulated the ingredients for meth production to stem that growing drug problem. Provided more flexibility to higher education institutions to govern themselves more effectively.

News Release Symantec Gateway Security 5400 Series Protects West Virginia Schools Security Appliances Block Intruders, Worms and Spam While Filtering Internet Content CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 26, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that public school authorities in Braxton County, W.Va., are deploying Symantec Gateway Security 5400 Series appliances in each of their K-12 school locations to provide comprehensive protection from network intrusions, malicious code, spam email and Internet content inconsistent with school policies. As school districts increasingly utilize technology to facilitate instruction, maintain records and archive sensitive information, district IT authorities are tasked with supporting the authorized sharing of information while preventing disclosure of data through co-opted or compromised computers. Braxton County is using multiple Symantec Gateway Security 5420 appliances to prevent campus network intrusions and block a wide range of cyber threats, in accordance with district policies and state and federal regulations. Complementing the school district's existing use of Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition at all network tiers, Symantec Gateway Security 5420 appliances provide each school site with integrated protection from cyber attacks and undesired content by combining firewall, intrusion protection and custom Internet filtering technologies on a single appliance platform easily operated through a centralized management console.
