Abbreviation:
WV In 1861, Virginians in the northwestern part of the state defied Virginia's secession from the United States. The region chose to remain in the Union and form a new state. West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. The state motto is "Mountaineers are always free", and West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the "Mountain State". With an average altitude of 1,500 feet above sea level, it's the highest of any state east of the Mississippi River. For a long time, West Virginia was a leading producer of coal in North America, but many people left to pursue better employment opportunities. That trend has turned around, and now the state's economy is in a more stable condition. West Virginia, in the Appalachian Highlands, has some of the most rugged land in the United States. The state has very few large areas of level ground, except for strips of valley land that lie along the larger rivers. Forests of valuable hardwood trees grow on the mountain slopes and vast mineral deposits lie under the ground. Beautiful scenery, mineral springs and a variety of wildlife attracts tourists, campers, hunters and fishing enthusiasts.

is one of the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast. Its entire Western border is in the Appalachian mountians, which run from Southwest to Northeast. Approaching from the ocean, one would enter the great port city of Norfolk , first passing its even more populous suburb, Virginia Beach. Neighboring cities include Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake . This area is generally called Hampton Roads. It is also known as the Tidewater, together with everything east of Washington and Richmond.
(Bear in mind that lawyers in Virginia typically practice in several counties and cities.)
Two hours West of Norfolk is Richmond , the capital. Two hours Northwest of Richmond is Charlottesville , just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Thomas Jefferson lived near there. Beyond these mountains lies the great Shennandoah Valley , and then the Allegheny mountains and desolateWest Virginia, a completely separate State which is not affiliated in any way with Virginia.
Two hours North of Richmond, Washington, D.C., the U.S.'s capital, lies in an independent district between Virginia and Maryland.

    APPALACHIA AND THE OZARKS
T he Appalachian Uplands, stretching from New York to Alabama, and the area of the Ozark-Ouachita mountains are separated by some 400 kilometers of land. They are actually two parts of a single physiographic province that have a strong topographic similarity and an unusually close association between topography and human settlement. Early settlers, when they reached the shores of colonial America, heard tales of a vast range of high mountains to the west. As they moved into those mountains, they discovered that their elevation had been exaggerated. Only in a few small areas do the Appalachians or Ozarks approach the dramatic vistas so common in the West. Nevertheless, most who concern themselves with such questions would agree that much of the Appalachian and Ozark topography should be called mountainous. Local relief is greater than 500 meters in many areas, and it is sometimes greater than 1,000 meters. Slopes are often steep. The human geography of Appalachia remains closely intertwined with its topography. Without the mountains, the area would merely be a part of several adjoining areas, such as the Deep South. With them, Appalachia and the Ozarks exist as a distinctive and identifiable American region (

1 - Access to Quality Health Service

    Background
The geography of West Virginia in and of itself presents problems with access to quality health care. The surface elevation of West Virginia is extremely uneven. It ranges from a low of 240 feet in the Valley of the Potomac to a high of 4,862 feet at Spruce Knob in Pendleton County. West Virginia's mountains are often steep and rugged, rising and falling in successive waves of ranges. There is very little flat land in the state. Because West Virginia is a mountainous state, time and distance factors applicable to the flatlands of the Midwest and the East Coast are grossly inappropriate when applied to the state's rugged terrain. For example, time/distance maps depict the distance from Charleston, WV, to Washington, DC, as 250 miles. This "as the crow flies" distance is underestimated using these maps. Actual mileage, using the best records available, is approximately 360 miles, and the average automobile trip between the two cities is about six hours. Non-interstate travel through West Virginia can be treacherous, with numerous mountains to climb, narrow and winding secondary roads, ubiquitous coal trucks, and never-ending road repairs. During the months of late December through early April, poor weather conditions add more time or prevent driving altogether.

    2. Geography and Strategic Importance of the Valley
The Shenandoah Valley is that portion of the Great Valley of Virginia that is drained by the Shenandoah River and its affluents. The Valley extends on a southwest to northeast bearing, from its headwaters north of Lexington to the Potomac River, a distance of about 140 miles. For convenience, the Valley can be said to extend from Lexington to the Potomac River, although the watershed in the immediate vicinity of Lexington drains south to the James River. The Shenandoah Valley is bounded on the northwest by North Mountain, the first range of the Allegheny Mountains, and on the southeast by the Blue Ridge, which separates the Valley from the Piedmont region and coastal plain of eastern Virginia. The distance from Washington to the Blue Ridge at Snickers Gap is about fifty-five miles; from Richmond to the Blue Ridge is about a hundred. At its widest, the Valley is nearly twenty-five miles across. North of the Potomac River, the Valley continues into Maryland and Pennsylvania with a similar configuration, but there it is called the Cumberland Valley, and the Blue Ridge is named South Mountain. The Shenandoah Valley encompasses two counties in West Virginia: Berkeley and Jefferson; and seven counties in Virginia: Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, Page, Rockingham, and Augusta. Highland County has been included in the study region because of its intimate association with Jackson's 1862 Campaign, even though it is beyond North Mountain. Berkeley, Jefferson, Frederick, Clarke, and Warren counties are referred to as the Lower (downstream) Valley; while the counties south of Strasburg are called the Upper Valley.
