The self-reliant, "Mountaineer" ethos still runs strong, and Montana-style militia types may lurk in the hills and hollows, but the lingering impression West Virginia leaves behind is of taking a step back in time to a world where men work hard in mines and mills, women raise the kids, and everybody goes to church on Sunday. Parkersburg Parkersburg Though the first impression can be fairly bleak, Parkersburg does merit a closer look. The Blennerhasset Museum boats ($7) leave hourly for the island from Point Park, which is two blocks west of the museum, under the railroad bridges and on the far side of the 25-foot concrete flood walls at the confluence of the rivers. There are a couple of coffee shops along 7th Street (US-50), like the Travelers Restaurant and the 24-hour Mountaineer Family Restaurant , near I-77 on the east side of town. There are a number of churches in and around the Green Bank area offering worship services for various denominations. Multi-denominational worship services are also offered at some churches. Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Brethren, Lutheran, Episcopalian and Catholic Churches all exist in the area. Arbovale Methodist Church The Green Bank area is rural and has only a few stores and shops. In the immediate area of the Observatory, the stores include Trent's General Store, and Henry's Quick Stop convenience store. Although small, among Trent's, and Henry's, the variety of items stocked is surprisingly large, and you can find most of the necessities of life. Trent's and Henry's carry basic food products including milk,eggs, bread, canned goods, and some produce. Trent's also carrys a good selection of hardware items. For larger scale shopping, you will need to travel to one of the larger towns in the area.The most popular locations are Elkins, an hour's drive to the north, and Lewisburg, 1.5 hours to the south. Elkins has two large supermarkets, a Walmart, hardware stores, restaurants, and a movie theatre. Lewisburg is slightly larger and has a Walmart Super Store and most of the other stores. For somewhat larger scale shopping, popular locations are Harrisonburg, Virginia (2hour's drive), Charlottesville, Virginia (2.5 hours), Clarksburg, West Virgina (2 hours), and Roanoke, Virginia (3 hours). All of these cities have large shopping malls, and have a variety of "super-centers" such as Costco, Sam's Club, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THIS? The postcard at the top of this page is ultra scarce if it was mailed and has an 1899 postmark. It's probably worth $200 -$300 today...maybe more. Smith Jewelry on Market Street ordered those cards from Germany in 1899 (three different cards, possibly) and the German company sent them to Parkersburg with printed postcard backs, even though they were supposed to be trade cards with no postcard markings. A few of them got out and were mailed before the Post Office Department forced Smith to counterstamp them with a design that obliterated the "Post Card" markings. Probably several were never counterstamped and also never mailed. Picture postcards in 1899 were not legal. (Thanks to Patrick Cummings) Greetings from the turn of the last century.
