Geography of Occupation
The Geography of Occupation: Education in Conflict
To understand the current hardships of Al Quds University and other Palestinian educational institutions, it is necessary to explore the geography of Israeli occupation. This geography shows the real colour of the degradation to which people are subjected and the effects of long-standing colonizing policies. One would have thought a simple, self-evident right to education should be guaranteed.
The eight universities in Gaza and the West Bank, other educational institutions and hundreds of schools are all subjected to severe restrictions in the delivery of knowledge, as a result of Israeli measures. Normal education has continued to be disrupted over the past 35 years of occupation, especially during and after the first Intifada started in 1987. Birzeit University was particularly singled out for harassment during this period because of its perceived role in intellectual leadership. Faculty and students were arbitrarily detained, the university president exiled, and the campus closed for extended periods. The measures resulted in a movement of ‘underground’ education, when faculty met students in private homes and other unofficial ‘campuses’.
Today, student and faculty attendance at all universities continues to be severely affected by the presence of Israeli checkpoints, curfews, sometimes by direct harassment, attacks and willful destruction. A single checkpoint on a West Bank road can close down teaching for many days. A study term of 15 weeks usually ends up being compressed into less than 12 weeks or extended over six or seven months. The academic and other effects are cumulative and drastic in the long-term, since few courses are taught in full. Not only is educational delivery impaired and an acute financial crisis affects all aspects of educational work. There is an unsettling sense of constant precariousness that makes any planning and any motivation difficult indeed. Priorities have shifted from an emphasis on quality to a struggle for mere survival.

(From a report issued by the IDF Intelligence Branch - July 2003)
General Characteristics: The propaganda effort to delegitimize the State of Israel is clearly reflected in the maps of 'Palestine' and the accompanying geographical information that appear in the textbooks used in the Palestinian Authority (PA) education system. The ideological and political messages in the textbooks deny the existence of the State of Israel, repudiate the connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel, and emphasize the Arab-Islamic character of "Palestine" - which is described solely as part of the Arab and Islamic world. This indoctrination of the younger generation begins at an early age, continuing until the completion of studies in institutes of higher education. The anti-Israeli political and ideological messages are promoted through a variety of methods and approaches. The study of geography constitutes a considerable instrument for the advancement of such messages. Following are the conclusions of a review of Palestinian textbooks for the school years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 and of research conducted by the Government Coordinator of Activities in the Territories:
  • The State of Israel is totally ignored. This is seen through systematic omission of the name of Israel, replaced by "Palestine," which appears alongside the Arab countries of the region (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt).

Deriving its name from its location on the western bank of the Jordan River, the West Bank contains many sites of immense religious importance to Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Although much of the West Bank is under the control of Israel, the Palestinian Authority exercises self-government in several major cities and other portions of the region.

The mineral-rich Dead Sea is located to the southeast and is surrounded by historical sites and nature reserves.
The West Bank is 75 percent Muslim (predominantly Sunni), with sizeable Jewish and Christian communities as well. Arabic is the official language of the West Bank, although Hebrew and English are also widely spoken.

t's not, for the most part, a towering concrete wall. It won't cut off "200,000 Palestinians" from Palestinian territory. And it won't involve Israel annexing massive chunks of the West Bank. Hebrew University Geography Professor Noam Shoval made those points in a lecture at the Asper Jewish Community Campus's Berney Theatre February 5, 2004. The Jerusalem-born Shoval, who has a PhD in geography from Hebrew U, spoke about Israel's Security Fence - The Impacts on Israel and Jerusalem. Shoval tackled myths that have sprung up about the fence over the past few years in his lecture, sponsored by the Winnipeg Chapter of Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University.
"Palestinians have managed to convince the international media that Israel is building a 600-kilometre concrete wall, eight metres high," he said, as maps of the wall, statistics and photos appeared on a screen behind him. In fact, the "concrete wall" the media often use to make that point was built by a Canadian company at the end of the 1990s."It (originally) didn't have anything to do with the security fence,"the first section of which was finished only last July 31.

The New Israeli Geography Erasing History Of Villages
    Saeda Hamad Al-Hayat 2003/11/21
According to the new Israeli geography, the village of Azoon Atmeh in the district of Qalqilia is no longer part of the occupied Palestinian West Bank. The separation wall has 'moved' it westward, locking it between an iron gate and the fictional Green line. And yet, according to Israel's plan, the village itself and its 3,000 inhabitants will not be part of the state of Israel. To enter the Palestinian village, one must come from within the Green line, where Palestinians who do not reside in the village are forbidden to cross the iron gate to the West Bank and enter it. The village inhabitants are allowed to cross the military gate toward neighboring villages, but only during the hours set by the soldiers. The scene is all the more surprising because Israelis describe the wall as a security wall, but in the village and around its houses, there are houses of the Jewish settlement of Shaar, which are only separated from the Palestinian houses by a fence. The village is just a few meters away from the village of Kfer Qasem, and there is no material separation between the village and the Green line after the military barrack was removed, leaving only an Israeli military patrol to control the passing cars. On both sides of the military gate, dozens of students and teachers wait every morning to be allowed to cross the gate because one part of the common school for both villages is in Azoon Atmeh and the other in Beit Amin.

    http://www.wws.princeton.edu/~wws401c/geography.html
Geography of Water Resources The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Eighty percent of the basin, however, is in Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank, which do not have other significant surface water sources, and have only limited groundwater sources. Jordan relies on the surface waters of the basin for 75% of its water needs, while Israel relies on the surface waters for only 30% of its water consumption because it has larger aquifers from which to draw water. Syria relies on the basin minimally, for the Euphrates River and other smaller basins fall within its borders. Israel and Palestine have an combined 1.4 BCM/yr of renewable water resources, with an additional 450 MCM/yr captured by Israeli water reuse and rainwater collection for a total of about 2 BCM/yr. Already a deficit of water exists between what is used and what is available in the environment. In 1994, Israel and the Palestinian territories used approximately 2.1 BCM of water. Map of the Regional Drainage Basins The Sea of Galilee is the principal aboveground storage reservoir in the basin with a surface area of 170 square kilometers and a volume of approximately 4000 MCM. Its water derives from three sources: the Hasbani, Dan and Banias River, which merge at a point six kilometers within Israel’s northern border. At present, the water level in the Sea of Galilee has fallen more than 213 meters below sea level and is now no more than 4 to 6 meters deep at any point. This low quantity of water threatens water quality, including the toxic algae and lowers the water pressure that keeps out the salt water springs flowing into the bottom of the lake.

RAMALLAH, West Bank—The following is a fact file on the Palestinian territories—the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Geography: The West Bank and the Gaza Strip cover a combined total area of about 6,020 square kilometers. The West Bank (5,655 square kilometers) is located to the east of Israel and is bordered by Jordan on the other side. The Gaza Strip (365 square kilometers), to the southwest of Israel, borders Egypt, with the Mediterranean Sea forming its western edge. Population: About 3.7 million, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, with some 2.4 Palestinians living in the West Bank and another 1.4 million in the Gaza Strip, one of the world’s most densely populated areas. According to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), there are another 2.3 million Palestinian refugees scattered around the Arab world, 1.4 million of them in Jordan. Lebanon and Syria each are home to 370,000 refugees. Some 8,000 Jewish settlers live in the Gaza Strip, although they are due to be evacuated next year, and nearly another 240,000 live in the West Bank.
