Work
Dr Angharad Price is a leading researcher in contemporary Welsh literature and an award-winning author in her own right. Her second short novel O! Tyn y Gorchudd (Unveiling the Valley) achieved the remarkable accolade of winning both the Prose Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 2002 and the Welsh Book of the Year award at the Hay Festival of Literature the following year. Her research has resulted in many published articles on contemporary Welsh literature, and on literature of the Renaissance period. She has also translated selections of Welsh literature into German and Italian. Her work takes into account not only the literary, but also the sociological and political considerations of writing in a minority language in an age of increasing globalisation. She acknowledges the benefit of a Cardiff University Young Researcher Scholarship, which enabled her to spend time in 2000, exploring archives in the Vatican. There she uncovered some remarkable Welsh documents, including some which revealed an audacious plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. "Searching through the documents was a huge challenge," she explained. "The index system was complex and ancient. But it was fascinating to discover evidence of plots against the Queen - including one which involved a fleet sailing from Rome to North Wales and an army of Catholics then marching through Snowdonia towards London!"

"Unlike the English, the Welsh and the Scots and the Irish at least know who they are and where they want to be." Is this true? Welsh literature and culture will be given a context in this meeting of contemporary Welsh writers, who will give a reading of their own work. In Shifts (1988), his first novel, Christopher Meredith captured the lilt of the Welsh accent and the hard-nosed working-class flippancy. He has been awarded an Arts Council of Wales Prize for his work on several occasions. Wiliam Owen Roberts's first novel Bingo! (1985), was described as the first properly post-modern Welsh novel and marked the beginning of a period of new maturity in the Welsh novel's history. Y Pla Pestilence ) (1987), a novel about the Black Plague in the 14th century, won him an Arts Council of Wales Prize in 1988.
