Anglo-Welsh literature
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Anglo-Welsh literature is a term used to describe works written in the English language by Welsh writers, especially if they either have subject matter relating to Wales or (as in the case of Anglo-Welsh poetry in particular) are influenced by the Welsh language in terms of patterns of usage or syntax. It has been recognised as a distinctive entity only since the 20th century . The need for a separate identity for this kind of writing arose because of the parallel development of modern Welsh literature , ie. literature in the Welsh language. Many distinguished literary figures, such as Saunders Lewis , have written in both languages. The best known Anglo-Welsh poet is Dylan Thomas , followed by Ronald Stuart Thomas . Poets such as Robert Graves can be regarded as Anglo-Welsh, insofar as they write about or in Wales, even though they may not have Welsh blood. Anglo-Welsh novelists include Richard Llewellyn and Jack Jones . Their usage of language marks them out from writers of "standard" English, as demonstrated in the following extracts: My father moved his head, and I looked down at him, sideways to me, and tried to think what I could do to ease him, only for him to have a breath.

Many websites include material that has been created for use in schools, or provide information about facilities that cater for school visits. These websites have an education icon at the bottom of the resource description. Websites without an education icon also often contain valuable material. Even though they do not contain resources created specifically for schools, they could well make a great contribution to the provision of the Curriculum Cymreig both in primary and secondary schools. Early Welsh Literature
Dear Data Wales,
Thank you for your site on Wales. I am a writer (mostly fantasy fiction at this point) and I have been searching the net for sites on Wales. You can get all you want of Irish Celts...but I want WALES!! The Welsh culture and language fascinate me. My hero is Welsh.
What I have not been able to find (and perhaps no one knows) is more about Welsh Bards (of the old tradition, not those of the Eisteddfod) and Bardic tradition in Wales. I can find plenty about that hierarchy in Ireland, but I understand the tradition fell into disuse in favor of more Anglo-centric traditions in Wales. If you have any suggestions, I'd be obliged. Thank you, Scribe Dear Scribe, You might be surprised to know that the earliest known literature in Welsh dates from the late sixth century, but was not necessarily written in Wales. By this date, the Roman occupation of much of Britain was a distant memory and Germanic invaders were pushing westwards across the country. The native tongue, an early form of Welsh, was in use over the western part of the country all the way from southern Scotland, through Wales to modern Cornwall. The Romans had never attempted to conquer Ireland and the relative isolation of that country no doubt accounts for the more widespread survival of early literature. Wales, despite Roman, Anglo Saxon, Irish and Norman French incursions, does have a body of early literature and an ideal introduction to this is to be found within

Early Works The earliest Welsh literature is preserved in about half a dozen manuscripts written with one exception after the 12th cent. However, the literature was highly developed well before the Norman Conquest. Of early extant works the most important, the so-called Four Ancient Books of Wales, are The Book of Aneurin, The Book of Taliesin, The Black Book of Caemarthen, and The Red Book of Hergest. Much of the poetry in these manuscripts is credited to four late 6th-century bards— Aneurin Taliesin , Myrddin (the Merlin of Arthurian romance), and Llywarch Hen—and most of the anonymous poetry is marked by style and subject as belonging to their various schools. Early Welsh poetry is epic, romantic, and historical. Songs in praise of heroes (many pre-Christian and mythological) and elegiac poems of desolation and longing frequently appear. They are marked by a rich, musical style, displaying the verbal felicity of a highly developed art. Among early prose survivals, the classic is the Mabinogion (set down c.1060). In this work the cycle of stories concerning the old Celtic gods and heroes—similar to those in Irish and Arthurian literature—is expanded by the addition of later stories and partly transformed by numerous Welsh revisions.

Five more stanzas occur amongst the Llywarch verses in the Red Book of Hergest and it is known that these five were once in the earlier (fourteenth century) White Book of Rhydderch . Similar stanzas are found in two later manuscripts (Peniarth MS.98 and Wrexham MS.1); some of these are variants on Black Book stanzas.

The Nature of Arthur When considering the literature it is important to understand the nature of the Arthur that appears here. The Arthur of (pre-Galfridian) literature was "above all else...a defender of his country against every kind of danger, both internal and external: a slayer of giants and witches, a hunter of monstrous animals - giant boars, a savage cat monster, a winged serpent (or dragon) - and also, as it appears from Culhwch and Preiddeu Annwn , a releaser of prisoners. Arthur in Medieval welsh literature provides a solid introduction to a potentially confusing subject in an interesting yet scrupulously scholarly manner.
    http://www.greenmanreview.com/book/book_padel_arthurinmedievalwelshlit.html
    O. J. Padel, Arthur in Medieval Welsh Literature (University of Wales Press, 2000) Since the earliest references to King Arthur occur in medieval Welsh poetry, it has been almost de rigeur to assert that Arthur, and hence the ancestry of Arthurian literature and myth, lies in Celtic tales preserved orally and transmitted by Breton conteurs to the Continent only to be returned to Britain in the form of medieval romances belonging to the Matter of Britain (though this theory has undergone some transformations of late). In his now classic bibliographic survey Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages: A Collaborative History , Roger Sherman Loomis devotes a chapter to Celtic Arthurian literature. Bromwich, Jarman and Roberts followed up in 1991 with the scholarly essay collection Arthur of the Welsh . But until this slim but thorough volume, Padel's Arthur in Medieval Welsh Literature , there has been no survey of the entirety of Medieval Welsh literary references to Arthur. The book is deceptively slim; 140 pages of generously set 11 point Palatino, digest sized, with a color manuscript detail on the cover. There's a "Select Bibliography," and eleven chapters that are thorough without being dense. Padel, a lecturer in Celtic Languages and Literature in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic at the University of Cambridge, provides a concise, scholarly, and even-handed survey of Arthurian Welsh literature, from the earliest reference (c. 829-30) in the
