Since 1997, we've been supporting an exchange, in which Welsh language teachers visit Patagonia to teach. We've also welcomed Welsh language learners from Patagonia to the University of Wales, Lampeter, where they develop their Welsh language skills. Wales has a distinctive cultural and linguistic identity, and is the only part of the UK with two official languages: Welsh and English. The Welsh language is a fundamental aspect of Welsh culture and is taught in all schools across Wales. There are Welsh language media and government legislation to support the development of the language which is spoken by approximately 20% of the population. The National Assembly of Wales funds a project in Argentina managed by the British Council to help the development of the Welsh language in the only overseas Welsh speaking community, in Chubut Province, Argentina. The Management Committee that runs the project includes the Centre for Welsh Teaching to Adults and the Argentine Welsh Society.  The aim is to help the Argentine community become self-reliant in its revival of the Welsh language. The project began in 1997 and will run to March 2006.  Teachers from Wales run classes in seven centres, help train local tutors and develop course materials. Since the start of the project, the number of Welsh learners has increased dramatically and activities through the medium of Welsh flourish. RE11900 Principal investigator: David Willis Research associate: Ingo Mittendorf Project website Welsh language version The project aims to produce a historical corpus of Welsh texts from the period 1500-1850 in an electronic format. Although similar corpora exist for such languages as English, French, German and Irish, there is a shortage of such resources in Welsh. This project will deal with the Early Modern Welsh period; a similar project to edit fourteenth-century Welsh manuscripts is currently in progress at the University of Wales. The corpus will reflect the rich diversity of the texts attested for the period by including texts and samples of texts from different stylistic levels and of varying geographical provenance. The wide stylistic range of the texts will make it particularly useful for the study of language change. It aims to make these texts accessible in a readily searchable format to researchers in Celtic studies and historical linguistics, and will allow scholars to search a substantial body of texts for particular linguistic features or other points of literary or historical interest to them. Many of the texts proposed for inclusion are not available in modern editions or are available only in modernised form, hence the project will also broaden access to the texts in question.

C Y M R A E G OVERVIEW OF THE LANGUAGE A ccording to the census of 2001, some 582,368 people (20.8 per cent) speak Welsh in Wales. There are no figures available for speakers in other parts of the UK. The Welsh Language Act of 1967 gave a very limited status to the Welsh language in the public sector. At the end of 1992 the British Government presented proposals to Parliament for a new Welsh Language Act which was passed in October, 1993. Following this Act a Board was established to promote the use of the Welsh language within public bodies and giving equal status to the English and Welsh languages in the public sector in Wales. The use of Welsh as a medium of instruction in schools has greatly increased since the 1970s. Welsh is an Indo-European language, belonging to the same Brittonic branch of the Celtic languages as Cornish and Breton. OVERVIEW OF THE MEDIA Media marked with an asterisk (*) are described in further detail in the media database W elsh is comparatively strong in the field of radio and television - there is a complete Welsh-language service on Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C)* and BBC Radio Cymru*, as well as a certain amount of Welsh on the commercial radio stations, notably Radio Ceredigion*.
