Caernarfon to Porthmadog, North Wales
Snowdonia's Newest Railway
Welcome to the official website of the Welsh Highland Railway Project . This is where you can find out all about the project led by the Ffestiniog Railway to rebuild and operate the Welsh Highland Railway , a neighbouring line running through the mountains of Wales which closed in the 1930s. Approval has been granted to rebuild the whole line. Half of the total length is now open, from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu, at the foot of Snowdon, and work is now under way to reopen the remaining half through to Porthmadog. This site includes information on the present operations and future plans of Rheilffordd Eryri (Welsh title for the rebuilt WHR), the developments that have led up to the rebuilding now under way, and lots of pictures. This is the railway project that everyone is talking about - check back often for developments as they happen.

Welsh History The long tradition of Welsh and local history at Swansea is continued by Louise Miskell, whose study of Victorian Swansea will be published to coincide with the opening of the new National Waterfront Museum, by Nicholas Woodward's work on Welsh demography, and Ifor Rowland's study of the Welsh March. The department is fortunate to benefit from the presence of several distinguished historians who have recently retired from full-time posts. They include Professor Ralph Griffiths, an Emeritus Leverhulme Fellow, who works on late medieval England and Wales; Professor David Howell who has recently completed his history of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society; and Professor Prys Morgan who is writing the history of Wales 1780-1880 for Oxford University Press. The concentration of research material in Swansea and its region is significant. The work of the Centre for the Study of Wales and its Borderlands has identified a corpus of medieval and early modern material. The South Wales Coalfield Collection is housed at the University, and Swansea is the location of the City Archive, the County Archive, and the National Waterfront Museum. 108. National Costume Of Wales
history and description of the traditional welsh costume.
http://www.wales-calling.com/culture/costume.htm
Welsh National costume
Welsh National costume evolved in Wales in the late 18th century as a development of costume worn in town and country. The popular image of Welsh "national" dress, of a woman in a red cloak and tall black hat, is one which has developed as a result of various influences which arose in the nineteenth century. Lady Llanover, the wife of an ironmaster in Gwent, was very influential in encouraging the wearing of "national dress", both in her own home and at eisteddfodau. She felt it was important to encourage the use of the Welsh language and the wearing of an identifiable Welsh costume. She succeeded in developing the Welsh "national dress" because people felt that their national identity was under threat and the wearing of a national costume was one way to declare that identity. The garments are made of Welsh flannel. The costume regarded as national dress is based on clothing worn by Welsh countrywomen during the early nineteenth century The tall "chimney" hat did not appear until the late 1840's and seems to be based on an amalgamation of men's top hats and a form of high hat worn during the 1790 - 1820 period in country areas.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. It took Unesco to recognise the contribution a town in Gwent made to history. Ziauddin Sardar on how the Welsh were the first victims of English racism Britain has been hit by a major historical tremor. The small Welsh town of Blaenavon has been declared a World Heritage site. The announcement was made by Unesco's World Heritage Convention last week. Hardly anyone has realised the significance of the news, because Blaenavon is part of the historic silence that has enveloped Wales for centuries. Unesco is righting a historic wrong that Britain itself, devolution notwithstanding, has been loath to address.

Amilas Stud is located in North Buckinghamshire in the UK. Our aim is the breed correct, true to type ponies with good movement and to have lots of fun in the process. Our ponies are first and foremost very much loved pets, the awards they have won continue to be an added bonus. The ultimate ambition we have for our ponies is to see them being loved and enjoyed by children and adults alike. To this end all our ponies are selected with a calm and kind nature as a priority, all are well handled and are exposed to as many sights and sounds from a young age including traffic. To show us if we are heading in the right direction most of our ponies are broken to ride before they are bred from. Ponies may be available for lease to ridden homes in the near future.
