64. PARDDU'S PAGES ~ WELSH HISTORY
Undoubtedly the best book on welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. It covers the entire span of welsh history from prehistory and the Red Lady
http://www.parddu.net/hanes.html
HISTORY,or 1282 and all that!! Undoubtedly the best book on Welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. John Davies, "Hanes Cymru", or, in its English translation, "A History of Wales". It covers the entire span of Welsh history from pre-history and the Red Lady of Paviland to modern times and the miners' strike of 1984. It's a book well worth reading or even just dipping into for information about any particular period. As I can't hope to emulate John Davies's scholarship I've just put together a few significant dates in Welsh history which you may not be aware of. It is believed that Dewi Sant . (St David), our patron saint lived during this period. There are many churches dedicated to him throughout Wales, including the cathedral at St David's ( Tyddewi ). In the Middle Ages, 3 pilgrimages to St. David's was equivalent to one to Rome. His day is celebrated on 1st March and is known as Dydd Gwyl Ddewi During this period Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good) formulated the laws which were used throughout Wales until Edward I enforced the use of English law. The laws of Hywel Dda were more enlightened than some of the English laws which replaced them Prince Madog is alleged to have sailed the Atlantic and discovered America and left descendants among the Indian tribes there Prince Llywelyn ( Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf ), the last of the Princes of Wales was killed in battle at Cilmeri. His baby daughter Gwenllian was taken by Edward I's forces and kept in a convent in Lincolnshire for the remainder of her life (50+ years!) to prevent her being a focus of rebellion by the Welsh against their English conquerors

Cartoon Buddy Club.. Wales and Welsh History 757AD King of English Mercia,Offa, builds his defensive earthwork to keep out the Welsh tribes.English tribal borders begin to shape the basis of a new country of England from the Kingdoms of Mercia Northumbria and Wessex. 851AD Vikings begin raids on the island of Britain from Denmark. 856AD The Welsh King Rhodri The Great unites the tribes and defeats the raiders, killing
Gorm the Norse leader on Anglesey island. He leads the Welsh until his death fighting the English of Mercia, when Wales was again split into three separate regions each with their own leaders who fight local wars.(Although England was invaded to become a Norse Kingdom living under `Dane-Law`,Wales held its borders and remained a free land.) 878AD King Anarawed (Rhodri`s son) continues fighting against the Danes and forms an alliance with the English King Alfred The Great.
Later an army from English Mercia and Wessex, join with a mixed Welsh army including the `Men of Gwent` to eventually defeat the Danes. However, this lead to the English Kingdom of Wessex to expand and reach the borders of Wales once the Danish threat was over.

History
London Welsh has one of the longest and proudest histories in Rugby Union. Although this website is getting on a bit too, it only covers a tiny part of that period. But here are the details we have. London Welsh finished 8th in the table. London Welsh found new stars and produced some great rugby but yet again finished fifth in an division which, more and more each season, is over at Christmas for most teams. London Welsh came through another season of encouraging wins and frustrating losses to finish 5th again. "Adrian Davies has in his first year experienced the highs and lows of coaching..yet he has comfortably kept the Club in the higher echelons of the 1st Division." John Dawes, President A season of consolidation enlivened by a good Cup run as London Welsh finished fifth in ADP2. London Welsh performed creditably in their first season in ADP2, finishing fourth and achieving our highest ever league placing. London Welsh achieved promotion from third place due to a league restructuring.

OUR PRECIOUS HERITAGE
The history of the Bahá'í Faith in Wales
The coming of the Bahá’í Faith to Wales, is but one minute facet of an almost unimaginably vast epic, a small reflection of a process unfolding in thousands of locations, in different ands, amongst different cultures and nations of this planet.
One story, typifying the gradual unfoldment of the Divine Plan for the regeneration of mankind, and this the matrix within which the story unfolds:
Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Faith, painstakingly built up the Administrative Order, a labour of love which preceded the launching in 1937 of America's first 7 Year Plan. "It was the first joint activity on a large scale, nationally organised and flowing into an international field, that the followers of Bahá'u'lláh had ever undertaken anywhere in the world." It lead to a "mighty pioneer trail covering North, Central and South America and into the West Indies."
Inspired, no doubt, by the success of that stupendous campaign the believers in Great Britain, at their Annual Convention in 1944, resolved to write to the Guardian suggesting that they too should have a plan. Back came the earth- shattering cable;- "Advise formation of nineteen spiritual assemblies spread over England, Wales, Scotland and Eire"

presented by
Hughes Hall and the Department of AngloSaxon, Norse and Celtic
On 30 April, 2001, our Lecturer was Dr David Stephenson of Cambridge Seminars, speaking on 'The Aberconwy Chronicle'.  It was clear at this event that the Kathleen Hughes Memorial Lecture is now a popular part of the annual Hughes Hall lecture schedule. In 2002 the Hughes Memorial Lecture was given by Professor Rees Davies of All Souls' College and the University of Oxford.  As President, I am most grateful to our Hughes Memorial Lecture Advisory Committee consisting of Dr Franklin, Professor Dumville, and Professor Patrick SimsWilliams (University of Wales, Aberystwyth) for nominating distinguished scholars to be asked to be our Lecturers. Hughes Hall hopes that this new academic initiative will make a significant scholarly contribution to the study of Welsh history and that the series will continue for many years.  I am pleased to have been able to welcome it to the College's calendar.

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
Hughes Hall was founded in 1885 as the Cambridge Training College (CTC) for graduate women schoolteachers. It is therefore Cambridge’s oldest Graduate College, consisting currently of around 50 Fellows and some 250 student members, now of both sexes, who study for doctoral or M.Phil. degrees or for the postgraduate diplomas and certificates offered by the University. We also have an increasing number of mature undergraduates in a variety of subjects. As a result, the academic community of Hughes Hall is now extremely diverse, including students of 45 nationalities and representing almost all the disciplines of the University. Enquiries about entry as a student are always welcome and should be addressed initially to the Admissions Tutor, Hughes Hall, Cambridge, CB1 2EW, U.K. (http://www.hughes. cam.ac.uk/).
An important step in this transformation came with the granting of Cambridge degrees to women in 1948: the CTC was then given the status of a ‘Recognised Institution’, the crucial first move towards integration with the University proper. The College took the name of CTC’s charismatic first Principal, the celebrated women’s educationalist Elizabeth Phillips Hughes. Apart from Miss Hughes’s Welsh heritage, there is no known connexion between the College and the scholar now commemorated in this series of lectures.

Adams County Historical Society
Historical News
Vol. 21, No 5, 1988 In the 1870's and 1880's several families from Wales homestead or bought land in Adams County. Among these early settlers were Evanes, Llewellyns, Williamses, and three brothers, Thomas T., William, and Owen Jones. One of the first to come to Adams County was Thomas T. Jones, who had been a slate cutter at the Nantille, Wales, quarries. In 1869, he had married Margaret Davies, the daughter of the manager of the Cwmllan Slate quarries, and they made their home at Rosehill, Talysarn. Thomas and Margaret with their infant son Thomas W. left home in 1871, and from Liverpool, England took passage to America. They went to a Welsh settlement at Old Man's Creek near Iowa City, Iowa. During their two years in Iowa, Thomas gained a knowledge of farming by working for Iowa farmers, and thus had both experience and an income to support his family. In March 1873, Thomas left his family which now included a daughter as well as a wife and a son. Alone, he went in search of land; traveled as far as Harvard, Nebraska, by train; and thereafter by foot into Webster County to the homestead of Dixie Jones, another Welshman. Jones is a very common Welsh name, and Tomas and Dixie were unrelated. However it was known that Kickie could be helpful in securing land for prospective settlers. Years later, a son of Thomas and a son of Dixie became friendly Hastings businessman.
