The earliest inhabitants of Wales were from continental Europe, who migrated in several waves and who later adopted the culture of the Celts . There is strong evidence (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/1256894.stm) that the original language and culture of the Welsh was similar to that of the Basque and that the Welsh are descendents of the original people of Britain and Ireland. Up to and during the Roman occupation of Britain, Wales was not a separate country, but all inhabitants of Britain and Ireland spoke Celtic languages and were essentially of the same ethnic origin. The Romans occupied the whole of Wales, where they built roads and forts, mined gold and conducted commerce, but their interest in it was limited, because of the difficult geography and shortage of flat agricultural land. They established only one town in Wales - Caerwent (Venta Silurum). The Silures were the major tribe of south-east Wales. Their military leader, Caratacus (Caradoc), had joined them from another, defeated, tribe. Under his leadership, they defied the Romans for a period after the Claudian invasion, but eventually Caratacus was captured and taken to Rome, where his dignified bearing made such an impression on the people that his life was spared.

Research Areas The research carried out in the History Department can be considered in several ways - thematically, geographically, or chronologically. Considered thematically, the department is strong in gender history, cultural history, intellectual history, social and economic history, and the history of art and collecting. Members of the department are involved in collaborative research projects and research centres, and have organised and participated in international conferences, concerned with urban history, the history of science and medicine, the history of war and conflict, the history of education, and the history of political thought. Further information about the research activities of individual members of staff can be obtained by consulting the Staff pages. Information about collaborative activities can obtained by selecting Projects from the left-hand menu. Considered geographically, the department is particularly strong in European history and the history of the British Isles. Wales has, of course, traditionally been a focus of research for many members of the Swansea history staff. Further information about this area of expertise can be obtained by selecting

Long barrows are from this period, or more normally just the remains of the rock slab tomb that underlay such mounds. These are generally called dolmens, but in Wales are called cromlechs.
Bronze Age (2100- about 700 BC)
Large number of standing stones, although no generally accepted evidence that these do come from the Bronze Age. The word for these stones menhir comes from the Welsh maen hir , long stone. Other remains are round barrows.
Iron Age
The arrival of the Celts, sometime between 760-700 BC. from Central Europe. Many hill forts were built.
Romans
The Romans arrived in Britain in 43 AD. When they arrived, they recorded four tribes in Wales - the Ordovices and Deceangli in the North, the Demetae and Silures in the South. They were resisted by the Silures of South Wales and the Ordovicians of North Wales, under Caractacus. The names of these tribes live on in the names of early geological ages. However the hill forts were no match for the Romans. The Romans destroyed the Druids in the base in Anglesey. Two legionary forts were built at Caerleon and Deva (Chester), the latter being in England (just).

ADVANCED SEARCH PROJECT TO DIGITISE WELSH HISTORY COMPLETE AS FUTURE IS SECURED By David Prudames Photo: more than 300 people who contributed to the project gathered in Cardiff earlier this week to celebrate its completion. It might take a journey of hundreds of miles and many years to view the thousands of cultural and historical gems held in the museums and galleries of Wales. But thanks to the recently completed Gathering The Jewels Photo: Speaking at the event, living Welsh jewel, Rugby legend Gareth Edwards MBE explained why the project was so significant. "Until now, these marvellous collections have been one of Wales’ best kept secrets," he said. "Thanks to the power of the Internet, people everywhere can learn about our history and culture and appreciate Wales’ unique contribution to the world." OWAIN GLYNDWR IN WELSH HISTORY
Owain Glyndwr is one of the key figures in Welsh heritage. He was of noble birth on both sides, being connected to all the Welsh ruling families. He had homes at Glyndyfrdwy, in the Dee Valley in north Wales and at Sycharth, near Bala , the latter being described by Iolo Goch, his family bard, as “this mansion of generosity”. He led a conventional life, studying law in London, and serving with Richard II in France and Scotland. When Richard was usurped by Henry IV, many refused to believe that he had died, probably from starvation.
There was much unrest because of the harsh rule of England, and strained relations between Owain and his neighbour Lord Grey of Ruthin, a close friend of Henry. When in 1400 Lord Grey deliberately delayed summoning Glyndwr to serve in the army in Scotland until it was too late to make an explanation, the uprising began with an attack on
