Diolch yn fawr. A Brief History of Wales Peter N. Williams, a native Welshman, has written a "Brief History of Wales" comprising 19 chapters and covering the whole sweep of Welsh history, as part of the Britannia Internet Magazine. The goal of his work is to tell the story from the Welsh point of view and to place the culture and language of the people in their proper historical context. http://www.britannia.com/wales/whist.html A Comprehensive Listing of the Medieval Fortifications of England and Wales Philip Davis, a contributor to the Castles of Wales web site, has launched his own site that is destined to become a valuable resource for anyone interested in researching British Castles. His project is called "A Comprehensive Listing of the Medieval Fortifications of England and Wales" and lists an astounding 3,967 castle sites. In creating the site Mr Davis has combined the best academic resources currently available concerning the castles of England and Wales into a single comprehensive resource. The database is divided into six regions - five for England and one for Wales - and includes each castle's name or names, type, location (county), Ordnance Survey coordinates, documentary source information, and a description of the remains. This impressive database is supplemented by the site's extensive bibliography and collection of links to other castle sites on the net.

St Davids Cathedral
St Davids, Pembrokeshire, west Wales Jeff Thomas 1994; Cadw Guidebook To understand part of the reason St. Davids is so special, you have to know a little about the history of the area. St. David is the patron saint of Wales. Legend claims he was born around 500 A.D. on the rugged Pembrokeshire coast of southwest Wales. He was the founder of a strict monastic order in the town that bears his name, and was the most influential clergyman in all Wales during the "Age of Saints." His place of birth and the cathedral built in his name became one of the most important shrines of medieval Christendom - two pilgrimages to St. Davids equaling one to Rome. Important sites at St. Davids include the cathedral and ruined Bishop's Palace, along with St. Non's Church and Well . St. Non was St. David's mother. St Davids is one of the great historic shrines of Christendom. Nowhere in Britain is there a more ancient cathedral settlement, for it reaches back fourteen centuries and survived the plunder of the Norsmen in the 'Dark Ages'. St David chose this wild, beautiful region as the site of his monastery in the 6th century and you will find his shrine in the purple-stoned cathedral, which nestles inconspicuously in a grassy hollow beneath the rooftops of the tiny city. The large, cruciform cathedral, dating from 1176, is a treasury of fine things. The nave has a breathtaking beauty, embodying three centuries of craftsmanship which now make up a scene of medieval splendor. There are superb examples of the woodcarver's art in St Davids - just gaze upwards at the decorative roof - and the choir stalls date from the late 15th century. Here, note the wit and zest of the medieval mericord carvings (carvings on the hinged seats in the choir stalls); they represent a trend away from the decorative severity of earlier times, and show that even in religion, humor had its part to play.

The Mabinogion
Welsh Fairy Stories The Works of Marie Trevelyan Perhaps the most well-known piece of Welsh Literature is the Mabinogion, which only became known to the world outside of Wales during the mid 19th century, following the translation from Welsh into English by Lady Charlotte Guest. In view of the lack of English translations, it had been assumed that little or no Welsh literature and poetry existed prior to these translations, however nothing could be further from the truth. The stories in the Mabinogion are believed to have been first recorded in Welsh during the 11th century, some eight centuries before their translation, although the earliest remaining evidence is the White Book of Rhyderch written in the mid 14th century. Welsh poetry, in fact, dates back to the late 6th century, making it amongst the oldest in Europe. It utilised three line metre, monorhyming and other complex techniques that were often imitated by the Anglo-Saxon poets of the day. Celtic poets, such as Taliesin and Aneirin, set the patterns and standards that Welsh poetry adopted and maintained for the next 1400 years, and is still evident today in the regular eisteddfods held throughout the country. The purity of the Welsh vernacular makes it virtually unique throughout Europe, and even the world, enabling poetry and stories written over
