Society and Culture ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Welsh culture The Welsh language unravelled, culture in Wales exposed, and just what was Cool Cymru? There are several dialects of Welsh, most audibly north and south. The road signs are bilingual, giving both the Welsh and English versions of the text and placenames. The daffodil and the leek are national flowers of Wales. One species of daffodil, narcissus obvallaris, is found only in a small area around Tenby. According to legend, Saint David ordered his Welsh soldiers to identify themselves by wearing leeks on their helmets in an ancient battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field. This may be a myth, but the vegetable certainly has enjoyed a lengthy association with the country. In Henry V, Shakespeare refers to wearing one as an "ancient tradition", and in the same play Henry tells Fluellen he is wearing a leek, "for I am Welsh, you know, good countryman". And what about male voice choirs?

T he result of a collaboration between father and son, Evan James and James James, Pontypridd weaver Evan wrote the characteristically passionate Welsh words one Sunday morning in January 1856. His son adapted a favourite Welsh harp melody and the result was celebrated by compatriots present at the Bangor Eisteddfod (the ancient Welsh festival) of 1874. Welsh Language English Translation Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi, Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri: Ei gwrol ryfelwyr gwladgarwyr tra mad, Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed. Gwlad! Gwlad! pleidiol wyf i'm Gwlad. Tra mor yn fyr i'r bur hoff bau, O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau ! Land of my fathers so precious to me. Proud mother of poets and singers, high home of the free: The fame of her heroes Patriots much blessed, Spilt their blood for freedom. Homeland! Wales!
