http://www.wiu.edu/foliopress/welsh/
In recent years, public recognition has been given to the artistic and cultural influences which different nationalities have contributed to American culture (such as the Spanish architectural influence in the southwestern portion of the US or the French architectural influence evident in New Orleans). The Welsh influence has largely been overlooked. This project, a touring portfolio/exhibit, is an attempt to rectify this situation and bring a consciousness of contemporary Welsh art as it exists on both sides of the Atlantic. Welsh artistic and literary experiences go back as far as its Celtic origins in earliest recorded history. Wales is a small, beautiful country with a unique heritage, culture and language. The strength and richness of the Welsh culture stems from over one thousand years of struggle to maintain its individual identity. Far from being an anachronism, Wales symbolizes the way in which a small country has contributed some of its traditions and talents to the world - the poetry of Dylan Thomas, the plays of Emlyn Williams, the acting of Richard Burton, the strong tradition of the male voice choir, the art of Augustus John, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the movies of D. W. Griffith. This project, a portfolio/exhibit, encompasses the literary and artistic traditions which are so deeply rooted in Welsh culture. The Welsh-American artists provide 14 prints and the Welsh poets provide 14 poems, each poem exquisitely enhanced by the well known Welsh calligrapher

Ancient Bards, Welsh Gipsies, and Celtic Folklore in the Cauldron of Regeneration.1 On August 22, 1861 the antiquarian Edward Woolley visited Aberystwyth, attended a Welsh harp concert, and shortly afterwards wrote a glowing account of this event, describing it as "the only legitimate performance we now have of the style in which the ancient bards must have played..." (quoted in E.E. Roberts 1981:46).2 An examination of the time period in which Woolley wrote sheds light on what he might have meant by "ancient bards." An understanding of the context shows how he could so easily but mistakenly juxtapose two widely separated periods (the time of the "ancient bards" and his own Victorian Britain of the 1860s) and reveals that the performers, far from embodying links to the ancient bardic past through heredity or reconstructing ancient styles through careful research, were relative newcomers to the tradition, and in fact, early participants in the folklore revival.

Wales - A WorldWeb Travel Guide Review
from WorldWeb.com Travel Guide "Croeso i Cymru" - "Welcome to Wales" in Welsh - is how visitors to Wales will be greeted by the placard marking the border, located to the west of England . Despite the fact that Wales is often blended into memory as one entity with the rest of Britain, it is distinctly unique in landscape, culture and tradition. The Welsh take great pride in their country's history and independence. The allure and appeal of Wales lies equally as much in its cities, towns and villages, as it does in its diverse countryside and landscape. Wales is surrounded by approximately 965 kilometres (600 miles) of coastline, with the sea bordering on three sides. Rolling pastures, rugged shoreline and mountain regions characterize the geography overall. HISTORY Wales derives many aspects of its history and culture from Celtic traditions. It is generally considered to be one of the oldest countries in the world, with evidence of habitation dating back nearly 200,000 years. The European Celts began to arrive in Wales in approximately 600 B.C. By the fifth century elements of Christianity became apparent, likely due to the influence from Irish Christian missionaries. Among these missionaries was a monk named Dewi who later became known as David, the patron saint of Wales (the first of March is St. David's Day - a day for the Welsh population to remember their roots and cultural identity - often people will wear leeks or daffodils to honour the memory of St. David).

The Welsh community in Patagonia
An American journalist who used the internet to contact Welsh-speaking communities all over the world is to address a conference about the globalisation of different cultures. Pamela Petro, author of "Travels in an Ancient Tongue: touring the World Speaking Welsh" began learning Welsh when she was studying in Lampeter in west Wales. She found it infuriating that whenever she stumbled with her Welsh, the locals would revert to English. So Ms Petro decided to go where English was not an option - other countries with long-standing Welsh-speaking communities. She visited the Hong Kong Men's Choir, a group which sings exclusively in Welsh, the Japanese bardic "eisteddfod" in Tokyo, the Welsh golfers of Oslo, the diners of the Paris Welsh society, and Patagonia. Cultural influences Pamela Petro is one of around 100 speakers at the three-day conference at the University of Swansea called "Writing Disaporas". The conference examines the so-called "axial connections" between different parts of the world, where cultural infuences through language, music and art move between people from different countries, or even continents.
