WEIGHTLIFTING HISTORY
Origin of Weightlifting:
Weightlifting: starting with the basics As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries.
Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001.
The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.

This article describes the sport of weightlifting. For information on muscle-building activity involving weights, refer to the weight training article.

Weightlifting is a sport where competitors attempt to lift heavy weights mounted on steel bars. The term weightlifting is often used imprecisely when what is meant is weight training (training with weights). Weightlifting contests have been common since ancient times (and were apparently included in the ancient Greek Olympics ), and were a part of the original Olympic Games in . Women's weightlifting began in the and was added to the Olympic program in Weights are mounted on a steel barbell which weighs kilograms for male competition and 15 for female competition. The weights themselves are rubber-coated steel discs, color-coded for their different weights, and held in place by 2.5 kg collars. Identical weights are placed at each end of the barbell. The barbell has patterns (knurling) engraved on it to assist the lifters to get a steady grip on the bar. Competitors start with the weighted barbell placed in the middle of a 4 x 4 metre wooden floor, coated with non-slip material. There are two different weightlifting events—the " snatch ", in which competitors must lift the barbell above their head in one steady movement, and the "

Olympians on cutting edge of technology
"Super-heavyweight power lifter Shane Hamman squeezes his face into a grimace as he grips a metal bar and hoists nearly 400 pounds of iron disks over his 62-inch chest, past his signature braided goatee and above his spiky brown hair before letting the weights crash to the platform. Sheer strength, of course, is largely responsible for the performance. But so is technology for him and other Olympians.

Olympic-style Weightlifting
An Introduction
By John Cissek MS, CSCS O lympic-style weightlifting is a sport that is inaccessible to many and misunderstood because of this. Rightly or wrongly, the sport is so difficult that many of its practitioners will develop the kind of attitude that turns off perspective participants. With this article, Jason is letting me put up a few things to try to expose more people to the sport, minus the politics and bs! Olympic-style weightlifters contest two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. In the snatch, a lifter takes a wide grip on the barbell and lifts it from the floor to a position overhead in one motion. In the clean and jerk, the barbell is first lifted from the floor to the shoulders (the clean) and then from the shoulders to a position overhead (the jerk). Both men and women compete in Olympic-style weightlifting. The 2000 Olympics will be the first time that women will be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Contestants are divided into either ten (for men) or eight (for women) weight classes. The weight classes in Olympic-style weightlifting are:
Men: under 47 kg, 51 kg, 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg, 105+ kg

of relevant products from Human Kinetics We English-speakers have, over the years, introduced a number of expressions to describe different disciplines or practices related to resistance training. Since this activity is so popular with coaches, athletes, sport scientists, medical professionals, members of the lay public, and the sports media, we do them all a disservice by the continued failure to properly identify these activities. Let's start simply with the term resistance training . This is the most correct, all-inclusive term to describe the various methods of body weight or external resistance exercise for whatever athletic or cosmetic goal. In the U.S., nearly everyone refers his or her use of resistance training as strength training . Certainly one syllable is easier than three are and I suppose the shorter term implies a bit more importance. However, most of these individuals are far off target in terms of actually training for improved strength. True strength training requires the use of an appropriately high intensity and low repetitions to have a positive effect on one's strength.

Sports UPDATED: 15:07, July 20, 2004 Olympic Preview: Chinese lifters ready for another gold rush The Chinese lifters, who raked in five golds at the Sydney Olympics, press hard upon an even stronger showing at the Athens Olympics to defense the glory of the weightlifting powerhouse. According to Ma Wenguang, president of the Chinese Weightlifting Association, China has pinned its gold hope largely on women lifters with an expectation of three to four golds at the Athens Games. Few would bet against the Chinese strongwomen, who swept all golds in the four disciplines they took part in at the Sydney Games, continuing the run. Another clean sweep by the women squad, including Li Zhuo in the 48-kilo category, Chen Yanqing in 58, Liu Chunhong in 69 and Tang Gonghong in over-75, is still a prospect. China's less dominant strongmen, meanwhile, should win one or two gold medals at the Games, with Wu Meijin in the 56-kilo division, Le Maosheng in 62, and Zhang Guozheng in 69 the prominent gold hope. China grabbed one gold out of the eight men's divisions at the Sydney Games.

Tang wins China's fifth Olympic weightlifting gold
Last Updated: Sunday, August 22, 2004. 4:07am (AEST) China's Tang Gonghong was crowned the strongest woman in the world on Saturday and has an Olympic gold medal dangling from her massive neck as the ultimate accolade of her astonishing power. In a dramatic finale to a gripping contest, Tang lifted a new world record weight in the clean and jerk to edge 20-year-old South Korean Jang Mi-Ran, who seemed to have sewn up victory in the women's superheavyweight category. Tang, who kept Olympic and world champion Ding Meiyuan out of the Chinese 'Dream Team', presented her country with their fifth weightlifting gold of the Games. The women 'Bar Belles' won three out of a possible four and the men two titles. The 25-year-old Tang, the reigning Asian champion who tops the scales at just under 120kg, won with a jaw-dropping total of 305kg, which beat her own world record set earlier this year by 2.5kg. Jang, just 20 and with little international experience before the Olympics, took the silver with 302.5kg.

Weightlifting coaches sacked NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. The Union Government has "terminated the services" of the weightlifting chief coach, Pal Singh Sandhu, stating that it had lost confidence in him following the recent doping violations by two Indian lifters at the Athens Olympics. The Government has also terminated the contract of Leonid Taranenko of Belarus, the foreign coach who was in charge of the team's preparations for the Olympics. Both the coaches were accused of having given unspecified injections by one of the lifters charged with doping in Athens, Pratima Kumari. Taranenko's contract was due to expire on August 31. "It was not that we took the decision to terminate his contract since it was ending anyway at the end of this month. We wanted to send a message across,'' said a ministry spokesman on Tuesday.

A colossal beast of man wanders over slowly in shorts and sandals, his thighs together, his ankles miles apart, and eases himself into a plastic chair alongside a big Polish guy with an even bigger smile.
